Cold symptoms?

Hello everyone,

Does anybody have what seems like cold symptoms first thing in the morning, aches, sore throat, tired, for an hour later for it disappear, I have had these symptoms for the past few days, as if I'm trying to fight off a cold but it doesn't come out. I'm taking 20 ml methotrexate, Hydroxy, Folic Acid and 4ml of steriods daily. Pain wise, hardly anything, which is good, but keep getting thses symptoms. It's odd. Van anybody shed any light at all? Thanks

Have you just come down to that dose of steroids I don't know but if you have might be related. I'd urge you to contact your GP to get advice as with this virus its better safe than sorry.

Hello Medway-lady,

Thanks for your reply, I don't think it is the steriods, as it's only that I've been on them for 11 months, I've been told each month to reduce by 1ml and now down to 4ml, I don't have a temperature or a cough, but just don't feel 100%. To be on the safe side I'm staying in to see if this develops, which it doesn't seem to be. X

I had aches but not sore throat when tapering off but you are right to be cautious. Best of luck and turn on tv and grab a book and chill.

Oh now I didn't know tapering the steriods can cause aches, hmm I'll keep an eye on that. In the meantime I'm suggled on the sofa with the TV on and Pippa the dog snuggled on my lap. 😁

I had headache, body aches and vague nausea so taper was slowed down even further.

Oh that's interesting, that is similar yo my symptoms, I'll leave a message on the nurses voice mail to see what they think. X

Tapering for me is agony. Literally feels like my muscles are being ripped from my bones. I have to reduce by 0.25mg otherwise I am very unwell. I also get pericarditis.

The fatigue and feeling like you've been thrown against a wall is well documented with steroid reduction. And the lower the dose you are on, the harder it gets. Could explain alot.

I wonder why the nurse didn't mention potential side effects from coming off them? Odd. I'll see what gry suggest. X

I've been on high doses for many years. It can depend on how long you have had steroids and the dose. Everyone is different.

Have heard that steroids help against the virus.

Yes that's very true.

You have just given me food for thought with your comment above. I haven't been feeling that well lately - headache and nausea sometimes becoming worse as the day goes on and aching and stiffness here and there. Thought it was Ramipril for my BP which I have been on for about eight days now or the increase of MTX from 15 mg to 20 mg started eight days go. I have also been tapering Pred from 7.5 down to 5 (after steroid injection) and then told to reduce 1 mg per month 4 then 3 etc. I reduced to 1 mg on Thursday and feel lousy today (had my second MTX 20 mg late today too) headache really annoying. Maybe it's the taper that's the culprit.

There are plenty of common cold viruses going about still other than Covid19.

The symptoms for that are very specific. Persistent cough, high temp and shortntss of breath.

I feel like you have described every morning until about 11am. When I was on MTX it was worse.

Personally, if it was me I wouldn't speak to my GP simply because I would consider that they are so overstretched at the moment. If you are concerned can you speak to your rheumie nurse specialist?

If your symptoms worsen then obviously use the 111 on-line service as per NHS guidelines.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hello happytulip,

Thanks for your reply, i found out on Friday one of the ladies at my work has a bad cold and went home, do think it is I'm fighting a cold, my symptoms don't fit with the virus. I'll stay in till Monday and see if it's eased and then decide what to do, see if I can wfh for the start of the week and then I should have more of an idea if it's a cold. You look after yourself too. X

Sounds like a cold which is hard for anyone to shake, let alone someone who has AI disease. I'm in a horrible flare at the moment and am just trying to take each day as it comes.

Keeping calm and carrying on is all that we can do.

I have to say that it bothers me how much some people in the general population seem to be acting like headless chickens. Panic breeds panic and that is not what we all need.

Take care and I hope you feel alot better soon.

Oh no sorry to hear your going through a bad patch, it's not nice, especially if it hasn't happened for a while. I know what you mean, some people are panicking but then others are acting like the virus is nothing! Hope you feel better soon too. X

Sorry to hear that you're going through a flare, hope it's a short one and that you feel better very soon.

I have a stuffed nose and feel hugely sleepy on and off during the day but my daughter and her husband, who were here a few days ago, were just recovering from heavy colds.

It’s such a frightening time that I think we question things we wouldn’t ordinarily.

Covid-19 symptoms quite specific but I’d thin ha don’t ease your in the next couple of days, perhaps seek medical advice?

Wishing you the best x

Thank you, yes I think I will ring the RA nurse number and explain, see if it's the reduction in steriods, a cold or just getting older and allergies! Keep safe x

I feel like this many times during the day. Like I'm about to come down with the flu....then I rest a bit and feel better. Generally it's first thing in the morning and right around 2:00 pm. Very weird, but I was told that it was another flare symptom. My pain is def not controlled yet. On Mtx weekly & Humira bi-weekly - praying something starts to work soon! Feel better! xo

I hope your symptoms ease soon too, it's not nice, (on top of everything else) I don't seem to have the symptoms today, so I do wonder if I was trying to fight off a cold. I will see if it happens again and if so, speak to the Rhumy team. Take care of yourself. X

I have this sometimes. Wake up feeling like I am coming down with cold. Sore throat, slightly blocked nose and just general light-headedness but it goes away after an hour or 2. Never too bad! Had it quite a few times since been diagnosed and put on meds not sure why and never mentioned it to my gp or rheumy as it always goes away.

I spoke to my consultant today and he has asked me to increase the steriods up yo 5ml till in see him in July, I really hope the symptoms ease up once I start taking them from tomorrow. I hope your symptoms aren't too bad.
