The power of a steroid jab

Ive been really bad the past four months im on mxt and hydroxychlouroquin so had to push my appointment with my consultant much sooner ( ive posted about it few weeks ago i think it was) he thought it was something he had not long learnt about i always forget the name something with the word band in it haha basically something along the lines of part if my finger on the inside is out of place and would need re lining up ( im the worst at explaining things haha) so he booked me in for a ultrasound and guided injection if it was needed. Had the scan yesterday and as soon as the lady started she said there was alot of inflammation luckily she chose to scan both hands as i was only booked in to have the ring finger scanned as it was the one that kept curling round and causing me problems i started to get alot of pain in my other hand so was very happy she chose to do both as i say luckily she did both because it showed that both hands were really bad. She called in my consultant as he was in the scanning area that day and explained what she found wasnt the thing he thought it was ( the word with band in it) but my hands were very bad she did say what was happening but they use so many words i always forget and with me having a scan i couldnt write anything Down i will deffo be taking a pen and pad next time to take notes, they finished up the scan and my consultant took me into his room to talk, he said he wants to try and see if i will be accepted to go on a biological drug as my mxt clearly isnt helping as well as it should anymore ive just got to wait now to see if i can go on these other drugs. He didnt Do the guided injection he gave me a steroid jab instead ive had them before. Ive woke up today feeling a new person you wouldnt believe im the same person as ive been the past four odd months, i woke up in agony was in agony when i slept, i couldnt get dressed properly, undo my curtians without being in agony the simplelist of things i struggled with and now its like it never happened like i say ive had steroid jabs before but was never this bad before so never noticed much difference where as now it seems the injection has worked miracles i woke up in no pain and didnt struggle getting out of bed like i had done before the injection

That is the way it goes with steroid injections.

Sometimes when you’re in a lot of pain just afterwards it calms down and starts to work... then other times it doesn’t have any effect at all.

It’s not a very exact science

Do hope you are lucky & yours continues to keep you pain free until your rheumy is successful in getting you on to a Biologic drug.

After being in pain for so long it feels good to feel as normal as poss again. Hopefully it lasts a while and things start to look up 🤞

Wonderful things in the short term when they work but make sure you don’t go mad and overdo it because you’re feeling good 😊

Well good for you. I had a smile on my face at the end of your story. Steroids are fantastic sometimes aren’t they. Good luck with biologics. They work well for me.

Don't be disheartened if the first biologic doesn't work. The first 4 didn't on me but the fifth one did.......so much so I'm off to a Pilates class at 9am this Saturday morning. However, 5 years ago I was in your predicament. Good luck

I couldn’t function without the steroid at the moment. I am still in the first / onset flare and barely able to function on a daily basis. Steroid injections would give me a symptom free day the next day, but the symptoms would return over the next few days. I am now on a daily dose of oral steroid (prednisolone) (reducing the dose every 2 weeks), totally symptom free and full of energy. But I am worried about what will happen once I come off the steroid. I know, thought, that you can stay on them long term.

Thats how i felt yeaterday symptom free all the agony i had been in previously and the struggle i had were completely gone, it feels like they are coming back a tiny bit now tho so dont think it will last too long. Feels good tho to have a day where you feel like your old self again

That's so lucky that the consultant was in the scanning area and could see immediately how inflamed everything was. I do hope that you will have a plan very soon for future treatment to get it under control. IF not - keep pushing them!
