Hi everyone, I hope everyone is doing as well as can be expected. I know this isn't related to RA so hope you don't mind me posting but I am so worried and making myself il and in the past everyone on here has been a great help. Anyway i thought I was getting better after having a virus or something that caused a bad cough with loads of green mucus I thought I was getting over it as cough was finally going away (a few family members had similar) anyway last Friday when i went into bed I felt I had something down in throat/chest that i had to cough up and i was shocked to see bright red blood on tissue (no mucus) so I got out of bed and the next thing I could feel a rush of blood in my mouth, there was quite a lot and I thought i was going to choke, I really panicked and called the energency services who came out (paramedics) who thought it was a burst blood vessel in throat even although I asked with the amount that came up if this was possible, they said I could go into A&E to get checked out if i wanted, i said if that's what it was I wouldnt bother although they said if it happens again call us right back, the next few days it was just little bits until it stopped a couple of days ago, I went to my doctor on Monday and she asked if i smoked, i stopped about 14 years ago, she sent me for x-ray same day and and my results are not back yet, I am terrified this is cancer. I don't suppose anyone would know if burst blood vessels in throat could cause this or could offer and other ideas other than cancer. I get rituximab and take sulphasaline and hydroxycholoquine. x
coughed up blood: Hi everyone, I hope everyone is... - NRAS
coughed up blood
Don’t panic it could be a burst blood vessel when its mixed with saliva a little blood goes along way. The fact it is fresh blood is good sign if it was dark and clots of blood I would be more worried. If you have had a chest infection with lots of coughing you could have a lot of irritation going on. I’m not a medic but your being tested and it won’t be long till you get your results.
Try not to worry I know that’s easier said than done. X
Thanks for your reply I do appreciate it, i just thought it seemed a lot for a blood vessel as i felt my whole mouth filled with it. Thank you for replying. x
Yes try not to worry dark blood is the one to worry abt just wait for results think you’ve just coughed a bit to hard
Thanks so much for your reply. I'm even thinking i have some of the symptoms of esophicus cancer (can't spell it) but will have to wait and get results. xx
Many members of my family have had Cancer of the esophagus none have presented with bleeding as their symptoms. Heartburn, difficulty in swallowing, or food coming back and sudden weight loss . Fresh red blood usually does not mean cancer more likely a burst blood vessel. Don’t worry until you have to. Waiting for answers is so difficult and stressful.
Thank you so much for your very helpful reply, really appreciate it xx
You had a bad cough & that will have inflamed the blood vessels & that is probably all it is....a bit like when you blow your nose too hard when you have a cold.
I’m if sure your GP sent you for a regular XRay she won’t be too worried.
Thank you for your reply. I really am such a worrier and been reading about all sorts of frightening things it could be, I will have to stop doing that, i have lost a half stone this week with not eatinng. x
My mum had it in throat she never coughed blood though and they cleared it and she was 91 !!!!!
I have not come across Rituximab in association with Sulfasalazine and Hydroxychloroquine, only with Methotrexate, which is what I have. Very successful, too.
Yes Richard, it has worked well for me too, I am supposed to take methx with it but to be honest I was on mtx for years and I don't think it heloed me much at all.
Hi Mille
Please update when you get your x-ray result.
I experienced similar problems with a chest infection a couple of weeks ago with fresh blood 'spotting' but less severe than yours. I'm still coughing after 7 days' antibiotics and following two molar extractions 2 days ago, so head, chest and bladder are giving me grief simultaneously!
The night before the extractions I did manage a hearty steak & chips, followed by a hot chocolate brownie with ice cream: a girl has to plan ahead when facing a soft-food diet for days!
I'm also awaiting a chest x-ray result but my own GP didn't receive it as I was referred by another new-to-me at the practice, and neither appears to understand our anxiety and the need for peace of mind. Mucus has changed from 'spotted' to milky and now pale green so I reckon steam inhalation is my best bet, unless anyone has any other ideas?
The referral for x-ray was in relation to MTX medication which has kept me in RhA remission.
