Osteoporosis medication and RA

Hi I've just been told my osteopenia has progressed to osteoporosis - despite taking lots of Vit D and a bone strengthening HRT for the past 9 years! ๐Ÿ™„ I'm due to start alendronic acid and a calcium supplement next week and just wondering if anyone has experience of taking these with MXT (15ml). I've still got RA symptoms with the MXT so dont want to take anything that might stop it working (eventually!!). I'll ask rheumatology of course but would rather hear the views of those who've taken it if possible.

Yes I take both of those and Iโ€™m on mtx. Not noticed it affecting the way my mtx works. ๐Ÿ˜Š

flared got taught to self inject - love upper legs - read online gets into body better than pills

I took AA for 6 months with MTX. The only problems were from AA so I changed to Zoledronic Acid which is an infusion. Try the AA, but if you don't get on with it, ask for another treatment such as Zoledronic. But whatever you do, DON'T LET THEM GIVE YOU PROLIA. Perhaps you would like to join the Osteoporosis forum, healthunlocked.com/bonehealth the members there are so helpful. Or you could visit The Royal Osteoporosis Society website (theros.org.uk/) and ring the helpline on 0808 800 0035. The nurses are marvellous. You can contact the specialist nurses in one of three ways:

Call 0808 800 0035 - free from all UK landlines, mobiles and call boxes

Email nurses@theros.org.uk for a reply within 5 working days

Write to the nurses for a reply within 7 working days: Helpline, Royal Osteoporosis Society, Camerton, Bath, BA2 0PJ

Our nurses are here to take your call between 09:00 and 17:00, Monday to Friday, with the exception of Bank Holidays and Christmas closure. Occasionally, the Helpline is closed for training.

All the best.

I am pre osteoporosis and have been on AA for some years. Nasty fracture to my knee just before Christmas . I only crouched down so no physical activity ! To have a bone density scan and another MRI on my knee. Can you tell me the name of the injection you take ? Would like to discuss this with my consultant.

Thanks for this. Do you mind me asking which injection you use? Am seeing my GP next week to start treatment and I'd like to go with as much info as possible.

Hi

I take MTX and have been on Alendronic Acid + 1 calcium supplement for a while now. I take Alendronic and calcium as a preventative measure as I am playing the game of getting off steroids.

I have not had a problem with either meds.

Brilliant! Thanks very much. You hear so many horror stories so it's good to hear a good one. I'm pretty sure it's the monthly steroid injections I've been having whilst waiting for MXT to work that have tipped me from osteopenia into osteoporosis. I have a rheumatology appt tomorrow so this is one of the (many!) questions I have for them.
