Bananas- and I don’t just mean RA

Morning all, are bananas any good for RA? I’ve read lots of stuff and have increased my intake from zero to more or less daily. Good for fibre I know but there’s mixed feelings for RA , I just wondered whether anyone has any thoughts on the matter. 🍌🧐

RD is so complex any one food source alone will not have a huge effect ( unless you have an allergy or intolerance to that particular food, but that is a different conversation). I suspect some on this forum will say bananas are fabulous and others that bananas are awful. Irrespective of personal likes and dislikes bananas are a nutritious food source, easy to eat and tasty, if you enjoy them , eat them !

The biggest problem with banana eating that we all too often eat bananas thar are too raw. They should be soft and muscy. Otherwise you eat only raw starch, causing bloating and gas. Cooking bananas makes them better digestable as well. Have also heard that bananas grown in big plantaitions are grown under stress that affects even us when we eat them. So the best way to eat is to eat ripe bio bananas grown on small farms. As for are they good for RA, haven't really heard except for maby because of their potassium, that even this is exaggerated. The fiber is good of course for gut.

That’s really helpful cheers. I like raw bananas, squishy ones don’t appeal but guess I’m gonna have to like them from now on 🤣

Same here always wondered why gut reacted🤔

I just read the complete opposite. God it drives me nuts all these conflicting reports. I read yesterday that we should eat bananas when they are still slightly green and very firm. Better fibre and not as much fruit sugar than when fully ripe. And slower to digest which is better. God knows what to think now.

Oh my, wonder really what science behind this?

Not altogether wrong. Here more facts. So not the opposite but raw bananas can be seen having certain benefits as well.

Hello Happy. Bananas are a staple [part of my diet as a great source of energy, fibre, vitamin B12 I believe, potassium and they have no apparent effect on my RA, No problems with eating them daily. It sounds like an unjustified scare-story to me.

What is the scare story?

I'd like to know that too, I eat a nana every day as one of my 5 or has the number gone to 10 now?

Eating too many can drive you bananas! :-O

I've made that wisecrack here before but couldn't resist!................. :-)

Yeah, it got a few laughs the last time. :-)

Actually you are not far from the truth. Bananas increase seratonin and too much seratonin is really BAD for you.😳

Simba, I've just had my first dose of gelatin in a cup of tea. Difficult stuff to dissolve. Stomach's been fine up until today, my 4th day back on aspirin + bicarb, currently have that burning sensation I get now again. Evening time is reflux time so here's hoping.............

Simba1992 profile image
Simba1992 in reply towishbone

You have the wrong gelatine😉You need to get the Great Lakes powder ( the green container not the the orange one) Easiest from amazon. It disolves very quickly and easily in any liqud, any temperature. Worth a new try.👍🏻

You're telling me I have the wrong gelatine! :-O It's the stuff that's used for cooking, my wife picked it up in Morrisons earlier today. Not only was it difficult to dissolve it tasted a bit yuck too. :-)

I've just ordered the proper stuff off ebay. They must make a killing on many of these supplements as they ain't exactly cheap that's for sure.

Muchos thankos yet again.

Oh my! I did tell you before what gelatine to use, but I did suspect that you didn't listen🙃 Gelatin used for cooking is not the stuff to use, way too complicated. Better to make jello and eat it. The Great Lakes shouldn't be that expensive and its a big container that will last for a long time. One of the better supplements and worth its price. Better luck next time:)

Sorry Simba. My wife keeps saying I never listen...I think she might have a point. :-)

Still reflux free. :-)

MissMinto profile image
MissMinto in reply towishbone

Hi Wishbone, sorry to hijack post but what do you take for reflux?

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toMissMinto

Omeprazole, Gaviscon and last, but not least Rennies. :-) I've recently restarted aspirin... dissolved in bicarbonate of soda this time. I also take probiotic capsules and yogurt, but not sure if this is helping any. If the addition of bicarb and the soon to arrive correct type of gelatine :-) fail to have the desired effect, then it's back to see my GP who is aware of my problems with aspirin and said he would try something else if it continued to cause reflux.

just before I got ill, I eat them a lot, even though I knew Id get stomach ache, and I did which got worse and worse everytime I ate them

did that start all my problems off? as I used to be creased up with stomach ache

Banana cake, banana cake and more banana cake (or loaf) is my idea of a good way to eat bananas! But then any cake makes you feel good, right? ;)

Nobody's mentioned the high sugar content in bananas, it's huge! Just becos we all think that the sugar in fruit is the 'good' kind and not a problem, that's not really true, specially if like me you need to lose weight....then bananas are a no-no. Same for anyone with diabetes issues. Low sugar fruit is better. Yes I love bananas too, could eat two a day, but not since I realised about their sugar .

Ooh interesting thanks...so I’ll have the odd banana then. Sorry all I’ve started a banana debate 🤭😃

This is actually pretty good science based info on how bananas raw, ripe and muschy effect your health.
