Hi everyone I’m due to have a another knee replacement and very worried , the first was generally anaesthetic and dissolving stitches but the surgeon that’s doing my other knee wants to do a spinal block and staples 😩 I am riddled with arthritis in my hands so don’t know how that’s going to go as I can’t lift my self up ... my question is has anyone had a spinal block and how did yo get on with it ..... Thankyou

Yes, I had a spinal block for my tkr. It was great and recovery time was better than for a general anaesthetic. I also had staples.....think that is usual nowadays. Again, no problems. Removal was painless. Good luck with the op!!

I had a spinal block 3 months ago,for my Tkr.

I was very nervous beforehand but everything went very well and I can walk again, much to the delight of my 5year old grandson who had never seen without a stick and a severe limp,he thinks it’s magic x

Yes I was, and I can honestly say that I heard nothing.I was lucky, because I had previous foot surgery with a spinal block, so I knew what to expect. Trust me, I would always opt for one if it was possible. Have recently had throat surgery and of course had to have a general for that....took longer to get over the op.

There is plenty of pain relief after the op, and it's important to accept it, so that you can do the exercises, which are vital to get your leg working properly.

I do hope it all goes well.....and I'm happy to answer any other questions that occur to you, if I can.

It was such a relief to me to be free of the pain, and I'm sure it will be the same for you.

Do keep I touch

Hi Laceygreen,. I had a total tkr in August and had a spinal block and clips. I was originally going to have a general anaesthetic, but on the morning we decided I would have the block with some sedation. The recovery afterwards , fully awake etc was good. The feeling to your legs comes back within hours as well, it was a good experience for me. The removal of clips was ok, (it may have been my nurse)but next time I will remember to take my painkillers (I am due another tkr next year). When I had my hip replaced the removal of the clips was painless with no painkiller.im sure your will go well. Oh yes, perhaps bring some music to listen to, I'm going to next time.

Hi Laceygreen,

I've had both knees replaced, spinal block + sedation and clips both times - honestly, you won't know anything about it! Follow hatshesput's advice.

My sister in law had a knee replacement with spinal block 4 days ago she did not have staples as it was glued so she will not have to return for staple removement just for check ups. She is home and mobile.

I too have recently had a knee replacement under spinal and with clips and I would strongly recommend both

I had bi lateral tkr 4 weeks ago with spinal block and anaesthetic. Wasn’t sick when I woke up and was unaware of the surgery thank goodness. One leg was black and blue. Also I had glue, would gauze removed 14 days later, would totally sealed, healed and neat as.

Don’t be worried get seem to have improved tkr over the years, lots of high tech robotics used as well. Good luck with it all just make sure you do your exercises and go to rehab if possible after hospital discharge.
