Toe update #2

Had a phone call from the hospital earlier to arrange an appointment at the fracture clinic, not the bone clinic as I mistakenly called it yesterday...duh, what a bone head! :-O :-) The person who phoned said it was to discuss possible surgery with a consultant on thursday morning. That was quick!...........

Oh 'eck. You sound like it's good news/bad news from your point of view. So, it's just a discussion of options and you won't decide then and there if you don't want to. Given the state of your poor feet it may be worth the short term nastiness for a better future where you could walk with less pain. I would add 'and prettier shoes' but suspect that, being a chap, that's not such a huge issue. Hugs

I.ve been mainly in flat boots summer and winter .mainly for foot and ankle support .feet not been good 4 awhile.

When they aren.t too bad .which has been rare .i.ve been in a thick base soft sandle . I loved my shoes its very sad but hey ho .many are worse off hugs xxkathyxx

I've made it obvious that I'd prefer not to have surgery. That said, it would be nice not to walk/limp in pain anymore. So will have a serious listen to what the consultant has to say before deciding. Will probably be back to ask opinions here before making a decision though. No issues with footwear, my current boots are fine and no different to what I wore with healthy feet. Stilettos never looked good on me anyway.

Seriously tho.listen to what he has to say .pro.s and cons .don.t rush into anything.

Keep us updated .will be interesting for those of us .who are hobbling around too. Hugs xxkathyxx

Sounds like some backtracking is going on. I'd like to think they'd discussed their findings with your Rheumy & that's what's done it. You do have rubbish feet though Wishy, just think next summer you'll be showing off your pretty tooties, you might even be able to wear sandals without socks!

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply tonomoreheels

They certainly haven't wasted any time seeing me. Not sure why, it's not as if I'm in agony or anything. Might be that they are concerned about my big toe joint coming apart, which is another reason why it might be wise to have something done.

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply towishbone

Could be, though more sense of it will be made at the appointment. Why oh why do they dismiss the feet, it's just not on. I mean I know it can be difficult as we use our feet a lot but when they're bad they should listen to us. I believe they should form part of the DAS, they did with my Consultants in Spain, they were examined every 3 months. Special consideration should be made RD attacks them, particularly if we complain of problems. I know yours were affected by not being on meds, there should be a full joint examination in such instances. Rant over.

Your tramadol induced bad dream might have done you a favour Wishy.

I couldn't agree more. Can't say I ever recall either of my 2 rheumies asking to see my feet in the 15+ years I've had RA. Even when I was sent for an x-ray in 2012 my rheumy never looked at my feet. Maybe if I had asked them they would have, but it was obvious that they had little interest in my feet so I never bothered.

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply towishbone

My feet were x-rayed when I first signed up with my Rheumy but after that they were ignored. It took a few appointments of me complaining about them, probably 3 or 4 appointments before they were examined difficult to know really because my Rheumy had time off. Every appointment starts with "& how have you been since we met last" & every time I started with "my feet have been... " (I added different complaints as each occurred & how they were at that particular appointment). It was when I had nothing other than my feet to complain about that she invited me into the adjoining examination room & was very apologetic that she'd dismissed them so long. She does examine them now, but I fear it's not everyone who has.

I strongly believe the feet & ankles should be included in examinations, particularly if there was evidence of erosion or anything else picked up on x-ray or complained about. We don't do it for the fun of it do we? 😏

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply tonomoreheels

Think I'm guilty of not complaining enough. Before leaving for an appointment my wife would tell me to make sure I tell them about this or that as she knew how I tended to play things down. So mostly myself to blame...typical bloke I suppose!

Now you mention it, I'm pretty sure my feet were also x-rayed not long after signing up. That was back around 2003. The next and last time rheumy had my feet x-rayed was in 2012 as I've mentioned, so I must have complained about them then, when though not perfect, were in far better shape than they are now. It's the last 3+ years when I stopped taking immune suppressants that's done the most damage.

keeta in reply tonomoreheels

Same here my feet and hands keep getting xrayed but when they are doing the score they keep saying feet don.t count.and my poor feet are really sore and mis.shapen.xxkathyxx

Oh that was quick it’s a shame you had to injure yourself to get them looked at but your choice whether to have surgery or not but doubt they will ever get better without. Wishing you luck hope their plan is a step in the right direction and will solve it for many years to come. If it was me I would sort it now whilst the offer is there.

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toLeics

Thanks Leics, I think they are concerned that my big toe is going to dislocate before too long. The other one, my right, is probably much the same.

It’s kind of sounding as if kicking the wall may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Worst case scenario is that they may have found something that needs swift attention to prevent further damage, but which might not otherwise have been picked up, and the speed at which you’ve been given an appointment might support that scenario.

Alternatively, they’re recognising the damage that RA has done to your toes which, by the sound of it, has been ignored at rheumy appointments over the years.

Either way, if the hospital is likely to offer options for long term benefit, even if it means short term discomfort, it may well be worth considering.

Keep us all posted on how it goes - good luck! 🤞🏻

wishbone in reply toSoreknees2016

I think you're right about finding something that needs swift attention...very probably it's my big toe joint, which appears very close to being dislocated in the x-ray. Not sure what would happen if that did occur, but can't see it being good. :-( Looks as if I might not have any choice in whether to have an op or not!

Thanks Soreknees
