Firstly you need to know the normal ranges of tests for the ones done in the local laboratory. ESR gives you raised readings (which this is) after any sort of infection or inflammation in the recent past. CRP is similar but more recent reaction (and is also raised by my standards). But this just tells you that something is going on, but not what!
Any tests need to be taken together with the history and examination.
Hi, I believe the normal range for CRP is 0-10 don’t know about esr because it’s not used in Leicester lab. A raised CRP in rheumatology terms is usually inflammation markers but can be because of other infection or because of medication. I’ve had a CRP of well over 100 before but that was due to meds. Raised CRP in itself will be looked at but as long as nothing else is raised wouldn’t worry probably just show your rheumy or GP that you’re inflamed atm such is the life or an autoimmune disease patient lol.
I was told the standard ESR is under 0-12 for a female, but then ESR can fluctuate with rise in body temperature due to any infection or cold, etc. If your arthritis is flaring or not under proper control it is very likely to be why your ESR is raised. My rheumatoid readings were very high until I was on the right medication. Ask your rheumy/rheumy nurse to discuss the results. Have you any previous results to look back on or are you new to being tested? Your ESR would also fluctuate if you are being given steroid injections for swollen joints. It would drop down to a lower level and then rise again once the injections had worn off after a few weeks. That happened to me too .. my ESR yo-yoed. Good luck and I am sure it will settle soon.
