PIP - mobility

Just wondering if anyone else has been refused the mobility element on their PIP having been on the higher DLA ? & should it be challenged? I have both knees replaced (twice) & a left hip (3 times) which is now loose & a professor at the hospital has advised 'it can not be operated on again - Be careful or you may be unable to walk!' I was only 20 when my hip was first replaced. Whilst I am able to walk to my local bus stop & board a bus this is sometimes very difficult, but because I walked into the meeting without aid (because a stick irritates my replacement shoulder) & I can sometimes walk 50 meters I no longer get any mobility & had i been claiming motability it would have all had to be cancelled. I can only do stairs one at a time & need a carer for many things when more than a few steps - I'm presuming I no longer am entitled to have a carer at any events?

I am sure that this whole Pip thing is a cost cutting exercise. I have a pip interview this afternoon. My first encounter with the state system

My mom has recently been given nothing for mobility after years of higher rate DLA. She had an assessment at home. They came to the daft conclusion that because she could walk 2.5 meters with her walker frame in 7 seconds that she can walk 50! She's just applied for mandatory reconsideration. She is in a lot of pain from her hip. Unfortunately pain isn't taken into consideration. She had hip replacement in 1982 and both knees 2 years later. Surgeon said wire has snapped in the hip but they won't operate to fix it. She got marked down on daily care because she has aids to help her like a chair to lower her into the bath, her walker frame and kitchen gadgets and can use a microwave to cook. This whole PIP thing is ridiculous and very unfair.

The qualifying criteria for PIP is different to DLA ...... benefitsandwork.co.uk/perso...

To qualify for the enhanced (top) mobility payment you have to show that you cannot walk more than 20 Metres, reliably, in a timely fashion, repeatedly and safely (Regulation 4A).

Take advice, but it may be that you need to wait a while and then apply for PIP again, with the help of CAB or similar organisation.

Really sorry to hear your struggles with PIP, I was in a similar position as you and I was awarded standard mobility in complete contadiction to my application.

I contacted the DWP and requested a written mandatory reconsideration and also requested the assessment report.

I then contacted my MPs constituency office and they contacted the DWP on my behalf and this definitely helped.

I was able to pull apart the report (when it finally arrived) with the mandatory reconsideration reply and to cut along story short I was upgraded to Enhanced.

It was a very stressful time and it drove the RA crazy but it was eventually worth it.

I really hope you get the correct reconsideration.

Yes I'm afraid I did. And bizarrely, I'm actually worse than when I first applied for it! Stairs are a nightmare to negotiate, and it's incredibly painful. Getting on and off buses equally painful, even when driver lowers it. I trip and fall all the time.

I didn't have the energy to fight it. I could kick myself actually. I was being honest. My dla wasn't due for renewal for a year, but because they state that they must be told of change of circumstances I rang them. The result was that I lost half of my benefits, despite being worse physically.

Things are worse now. I'm not telling them for fear of losing everything! I'll wait for renewal.

I'd still get out and about using sticks, but it's agonisingly painful. I suppose in fairness there are people who are wheel chair bound. People who simply couldn't do half of what I do. Mostly my quality of life is a bit crap. I'm a determined beggar though, and do go camping. However, if I didn't I wouldn't get a holiday at all. I can't afford hotels! Camping is my only respite. But flipping heck I suffer afterwards.

It seems if you are determined & suffer the pain they arent interested - I thought the payments were to help us get around like everyone else! eg help pay for a taxi to the hospital etc. We are very limited when they say we are capable of only around 21 or 51 metres in a day - if I dont struggle to do that to get to the bus stops I need a taxi for my hospital visits etc which are very expensive for the amount of times I have to visit.

It's an absolute disgrace the way this Government is treating people and it's got to change, you wouldn't treat an animal the way these jobs worths are treating people, I would definitely appeal as it's clear as day that you should be on the higher rate good luck xxx

So much for the changes that were supposed to take place... empty words as usual.

when i was assessed for pip i lost my mobility all of it. i was on high mobility DLA because of slipped discs, lupus? arthritis and fibro. because i did not fight it (had to go through ESA as well) it gave me nightmares and made me so ill i had to go on anti depressants because of the stress. but when my bus pass needed renewal i was not able to get it. i am so bad most days walking any distance is painful and exhausting. i had to go through another assessment by mobility dept to get my bus pass and i eventually got it. nearly six months later. i think everyone should appeal. its hard because it is harrowing and distressing but never give up. these are dark days for the sick and disabled very dark days

I also was on higher DLA mobility and when assessed on PIP was awarded high care and standard mobility , 10 points out of 12. This meant I lost my Motobility for a car so I decided to purchase it. With these points I'm still entitled to a blue badge which I'm glad of.

Good luck if you decide to appeal.

Oh cack... My renewal papers have just arrived! I'm dreading filling them out.

This is ridiculous!!!! If they looked into the disease they would know one day differs to the next. We’re you all on higher rate DLA and awarded for life??? I’m dreading mine come through as it won’t take into account I can’t turn my head round most of the time but can walk!

Yes i was on the high rate for life! As far as the mobility part of pip is concerned they don't consider that when you go anywhere you have to get back somehow! & I'm not sure why so many points are based on the confidence you have about arranging a journey, following a map etc - If you are a nervous person then you can get benefit to pay for a taxi but those who find it hard to travel but aren't nervous don't seem to get the points to help! You may be a nervous person on your own, but if you are, would'nt you get someone to go with you?

What is PIP?

I had a PIP interview yesterday and the nurse that interviewed me was not interested in the actual letters that I had with me from the consultants. She formed her own decisions. What is strange is that another interviewer while I was in the waiting room could clearly see that I was in a lot of pain and three members of staff on separate occasions asked if I was alright.
