Garlic helps to reduce side effects of Methotrexate

Garlic derivatives have various biologic properties such as antimicrobial and antithrombotic activities, immune system enhancement, and antitumor potential. (11). Aged garlic extract (AGE) and its constituents prevent oxidative injury in endothelial cells (12) and suppress cancer growth (13). AGE also protects the small intestine of rats from MTX-induced damage (14). Thus, it has been suggested that AGE has different effects on tumor cells and normal intestinal cells.

I’m only on 7.5 mg once a week

I don’t have any side effects, like I say so maybe to little.

Hi Philip,

I am on 7.5 mg weekly also since last year, I do not have any side effects also at this moment that I can feel. However, I hope my remission condition can be maintained therefore I would like to see what are the natural foods that can help me to maintain my condition.

My rheumy did mention, after another few more months, if my condition remain good, she will reduce mtx further. Hopefully one day I may be lucky enough to stop mtx totally. I am not sure if I want to take the risk of drug free remission in future if suggested by my rheumy.

Recently, I have just prepared the garlic honey stuff that I read online. It is ready to be taken now. Before I start the combination, I just checked to see if garlic has any interaction with mtx and I found the article above. I would like to keep that as a record for future reference.

I think garlic is a great thing, and do believe it has many positive properties. So I'm not disputing at all that it's good to use garlic.

However those two reports aren't much use? The first is about tests done in a pétri dish, and those sorts of studies are often not replicated when done in humans so interesting for scientists, but not the sort of study I base decisions on. And the second is of patient reported negative interactions - 46 of them over 20 years. And they have no objective monitoring, so no way of telling whether these interactions were actually due to the garlic and so to my mind fairly meaningless as well as statistically insignificant.

Thank you, helix for highlighting. These are just some links, I did go through many others and read that a lot of benefits from garlic. I did one honey and garlic and started to take it since Sunday. I think no harm trying out as I like to see if I can be off mtx one day.

Thanks. :-D

I love garlic, unfortunately my body doesn't! doesn't like onions either. It's contrary.

When I took it on empty stomach the first day, my stomach felt so hot. The feeling dye off each day. I have been taking it for 4 days already. Let us hope that my rheumy soon take me off mtx one day. The whole purpose it to ensure that my condition remains good.

Simba,

I also on and off take turmeric too. I read a lot of good thing about turmeric also. Because I do not like spicy food, hence it becomes a bit hard for me to add into my food. As for garlic, I use it almost every time I cook.

Hi Amy Lee - Haven't seen you in quite a while - I was wondering the other day if you are okay. Congrats on being in remission - Major step. Actually I love garlic so much and cook with it all the time. Take Care

Caery,

Yes, I am in good condition and I hope you are getting better too.

Being very greedy, I hope to be in remission forever hence I still continue to look up for any natural food that helps to maintain my condition. Garlic is what I have in my kitchen so it will be very handy. In fact, when I was in Australia, I used to had flu during winter. My doctor would only advise me to take raw garlic 3 times a day, he would not give me any medication. He said let my own immune system to fight the virus and he was right that I normally okay with that, so taking raw garlic is in fact okay to me.

Interestingly, one average sized clove of garlic has the same benefit as one dose of penicillin, so yeah - way good for you! Glad to see you still around.

Its meant to be great for your heart too!

I just cannot stomach the stench of it on other people even people I know who take supplements pong!

Maybe Im just supersensitive.

I read once that some people have genes that make them averse to pine nuts and coriander maybe Im just that way with garlic.

It makes me retch sadly and everyone who fancies themself a bit of a chef always throws in more garlic than is strictly necessary IMHO.

Hi Mandalou,

When I started the very first day on empty stomach, my stomach felt very hot too. However, if you do develope side effect, then it will be good to check with your doctor first. Apparently raw garlic is better than supplement.

Garlic is well established for its antiseptic properties. It is also a blood thinner so in certain people (eg those with high red blood cell count) can prevent a stroke. It is reported to reduce blood pressure in those with high blood pressure and also reduce cholesterol.

I think its properties are more preventative than curative. It is therefore very good for reducing the risk of heart disease. That is an important issue for those with RA which causes inflammation in the arteries.

One particular property I find useful is that it stops the awful allergic reaction from mosquito bites.

Kwai, which is Chinese garlic, is a very popular brand. People I've known with chronic coughs and chest infections have sworn by it as it has eventually cleared up the infection. The same people have said that other brands did not work for them.

I've started taking it again as I have a chronically high red blood cell count which is increasing. This is the result of a chronic lung condition and difficulty breathing. The reason I stopped is that I get confused taking too many tablets and supplements and I wonder if they interact.

Dear Delicatelnput,

I do know that garlic interacts with some medicines. Do check with your doctor before you try it. During normal cooking, I think it should be okay as the amount that we use in cooking is very small hence I believe the interaction, if any, will be minimum.

Check the link out for interaction, it is not the full list but good to read up.
