Liver blood test readings

Hi friends. I am now taking Orencia injection weekly

Had 12 so far. My question is does any one know what a reading of 49 for your liver mean. It worries me as I used to be in the 20,s readings.

Which test? There are several that give clues about kidney function - urea, créatine, urine albumin....

Normally on your blood test result form for each element it will say what the normal range is and the measurement used e.g. (0.2 -1.4 mol/l) so you need to look at that and which element it is as some are more critical that others.

Ok, so probably either ALT, ALP or AST...? but same thing really in that your blood test results sheet should give the reference range for each test at that lab. They do vary, so can't really say what these should be. In general I think there's a pretty wide range for liver tests, so ALT is something like 7 - 60. Anyway if it is abnormal you should be contacted, or ask your GP to check if you are at all concerned.

Do remember that sometimes what is more important is the longer term trend rather than a single result.

Hi There yeah I’m on orencia as well as mtx which both these medications can cause liver damage . I get blood tests done every four weeks to keep an eye on liver and kidney function. If you are worried about it speak with your specialist but keep in mind that the liver repairs itself if you are living a healthy lifestyle. Where as kidney damage is permanent . My liver function tests used to be all over the place due to my rheumatoid disease, until they found the drug that stabilized it. 49 on either ALT or EST is higher than normal but nothing to panic over. I’m sure your doctor will address the issue when he/she sees the result.
