Hi I've been taking it for three years now and it's been fine maybe it could make you feel a bit queasy but I always take it after food or just before I go to bed. I was very nervous about taking it but it's keeping me going so I can't complain.

Good luck

Trish

I have been taking it for about 18 months and it did not make me feel sick but gave me stomach bloating etc. but I have had stomach problems due to another operation. 3 months ago they persuaded me to try the injections, of course being a man I was a bit scared at the prospect. The self administered injections have been brilliant, I don't even feel them and my stomach problems have disappeared. So try not to be nervous there are always alternatives.

I always got very tired with it and had to sleep. Ruined my weekends but it kept me going. Have had to come off it due to high liver readings but was on it for many years without problems. Hope you do ok on it .

You might get a headache the day after or feel really tired, it's called the Methotrexate fog. Or you may be absolutely fine. I used to take mine in the morning with breakfast (which is when I now have my injection). If you have after effects then increase how many days you take Folic acid. Hope the mtx helps you ☺

I've been on it for 6 years and it has given me my life back. The first few months were tough, as it didn't seem to be doing much and made me feel a bit sick & groggy. But that wore off and since then it's been fine and has worked wonders. I take it at night, and make sure I don't need to get up early the next day as I feel a little more tired, but that's it.

There is no one answer to this. I took it long before I read about it here so although a little nervous had no real expectations. I took it very successfully for 7 years & I'm sure you will too.

Just take it before you go to bed & you'll be fine!

Good Luck....long may you thrive on it!

Hi. I've been taking it for seven weeks and only side effect I have had is a few minor mouth ulcers. I am also very tired but think that's the disease rather than the drug. I was advised to drink plenty of water too but I tend to anyway. Good luck!

If you don't already, have you tried a toothpaste with no sls in it? I had loads of mouth ulcers as part of my arthritis and then mtx. Which went when I tried non sls toothpaste. Just a thought

Actually I checked, and turns out I am already using an SLS-free toothpaste! That might be why the ulcers haven't been too bad. Haven't got any at the moment. How did you get on with your first MTX dose?

Ah ok!

I found it didn't make me feel as sick as sulphasalazinebut as I increased the dose it turned out it wasn't helping me. I then did injections until finally biologics.

My grandad just started mtx and he's getting on well with it. How's yours going?

Hi. I'm feeling better than I was but think I have a long way to go. H am also on hydroxychloroquine whom I have been taking for longer and I think that has helped. Still taking anti-inflammatories and experimented with reducing them but quickly realised I wasn't ready for that. Good luck with the biologics - hope they work for you.

I'm new to it too. I was on 15mg for 4 weeks and only really noticed feeling a bit nauseous and spaced out about 4-6 hours after taking it. I've just gone up to 20mg and side effects are no worse, in fact I felt less affected. Best advice I was given was time when you take them so that it's about 4 hours before bed, and that helps you to relax and deal with feeling a bit off.

Good luck! I was very nervous too but honestly, it's not at all bad and the benefits will be worth it.

I started MTX in May. I was nervous too!! The good people on this site told me what I might expect. I started with the pill form. It just didn't set well with my stomach. It made my head swim and nauseous the following day. I started with injections about 2 months ago. So much better!! I was scared to inject myself as I'd never done anything like that. My dr. didn't show me how, so I watch a bunch of YouTube videos. It has been a breeze ever since. I've been on MTX since May and Remicade infusions still no relief at this point. Still hoping it will kick in and I'll start feeling some relief from this pain from Psoriatic Arthritis and Ankelosing Spondylosis. Anytime there is rain coming about 3 days beforehand, I hurt horribly and can hardly get out of bed. It's worse than childbirth!!!

I have just taken my 8th dose, 10 mg. missed it last week due to a lip biopsy. The first dose wiped me out for the day, was advised on this site to take it in the evening and that suits better. Did get an upset stomach for a couple of days after, but seems to have got better with time. I do have an eye problem, my left eye seems hard to open at night or when I am very tired. Although I have glaucoma, my eye pressures are ok and no infection. Using an eye ointment, which does help. Not sure if it's just a coincidence or to do with the methotrexate. Hoping it will clear up soon.. Good luck hope this drug suits you.

HI. I have been on methotrexate for 7 weeks and didn't think I'd had any side effects except a few mouth ulcers but I have been finding exactly the same issue with my left eye. I thought it was just extreme tiredness but my arthritis is always worse on my left side than my right, so perhaps it is something to do with that or with the MTX. I have only noticed it since I started taking the MTX. You've got me wondering now!

Hi Hilary. How strange, you have it too. I was due an eye test not long after this started, the optician seem to think it could be a side effect , but not serious enough to stop taking mtx. My eyesight has improved, so I need new glasses. Will see how I get on when I get them. The Rhumy nurse thinks I should get it checked by my eye specialist. My next appointment is April !! So may see if I can get an appointment or advice sooner. Will give it a few more weeks, Incase it settles on its own. Get so fed up with so many hospital visits. Good luck to you, let me know how you get on. X

Hi. I hadn't thought of getting it checked but perhaps I will if it carries on. Happened again last night. I already have eye problems which are nothing to do with RA so really don't want any more! Hope yours clears up too. Let me know how you get on. X

The first few times you take it, you might feel more side effects. It really does get better over time. I remember the same fears. I take it on the weekend. After five years, it still makes me a little tired and sluggish the next day.

The first time I took it it scared me, I was nauseous, drooling, had a headache, and was extremely tired. I called the nurse and she advised I take more folic acid. I definitely started to and started to take right before bed. The side effects for me were awful and stayed that way minus the drooling. I was so nauseous and tired with a headache that wouldn't go away for 2days every week. I finally gave in to injections which took away most of the side effects especially the mouth sores. I don't mean to scare you honestly. I've also had to add the sulfa as well. I'm on the highest dose of metho now. I hope this helps.

same for you.

First time I took it I was also terrified! Then... Nothing. No side effects, no nausea., no vomiting. Nothing. I was almost disappointed!

I have been taking mtx for more than 2 years now. At the first few weeks, I had diarrhea and vomitting for 2 days. I basically could not leave the toilet and I was holding a small basket with me. I went to my GP and I was okay after 2 full days.

Then I started to have hair thinning and rashes on my hands and legs. These came and went until recently, they seem to disappear now. At the earlier stage, the rashes were very itchy though, but they were not as itchy at the later stage.

However, I continue to feel nauseous until today. It will last for a day. I believe to take it at night will help the situation. I will try to do so.
