Hi guys I'm on methotrexate jabs, iron, 5mgs steroids. Due to hellish lower back pain I added in Cocodomol too. Should I be worried about this latest news on low potassium levels? Thanks M x

Should have added, had urine infection and 2 loads of antibiotics in the last 2 weeks to boot! M x

Have you been contacted about it, or recalled for a re-test? And how low is low? Often if you are just a smidgen below what is considered "normal" it won't be flagged up as an urgent issue to investigate as could merely be because you were a bit dehydrated that day. If it is significantly low then you should have been contacted to have a repeat test, so if you haven't been then ask your doctor.

Yes, the bloods were done yesterday and i was phoned today with issue and appointment for 2 weeks time to retes . M x

If it's a two week retest I would try not to worry. If it was dangerously low then they would do it immediately.

Thanks I kinda thought that but with this coming back on top of all the lower back pain (new development), I was a bit concerned if it was a marker for kidney probs. M x

I understand it's a concern but if it was dangerously low you'd have received a phone call to go directly to hospital for a potassium IV infusion, whatever the time of day or night. As your appointment for a retest is for in 2 weeks I wouldn't worry too much.

Hi, can you tell me the symptoms of dangerously low potassium. Is there a blood test for this?

Yes there's a blood test for potassium. Symptoms can include muscle cramping, nausea or being sick, low BP, but these can be indications of other things so it's best left to your GP to decide if a blood test is necessary from an examination & you describing symptoms.
