Good question Millie as I think it happens to most of us. I find a long warm shower and some gentle stretches helps me to get moving. I have to be very gentle with myself and extra careful moving around like on the stairs for the first hour or so. Maybe the muscles and tendons just stiffen up as they have not been stretched and flexed during the night and therefore not getting the same amount of blood, oxygen, to them. That's just a guess, no doubt some one will be able to give a more informed answer. Best wishes

Sometimes I feel that someone has bandaged me up like a mummy! Can hardly get out of bed but yes after shower stretching etc I feel a little better sometimes it takes me 3-4 hrs other days only 1?
I used to sleep walk when I was young, wishing I would now it would keep me more flexible and still get some sleep 😙
That sounds quite a likely idea to me. Plus joints need lubrication to move easily, and if you're at rest they sort of dry up (it was explained technically to me once, but that's the closest I get to how it was described), so you need to get them moving again to get it going again.
Oh bless that stiffness I recognise!!! Try to stretch to get going and once your RA is more controlled it should ease up a bit xxxx
Another reason (apart from manky joints) is that cortisol levels drop for me overnight .The body hormones take a nap and need awakening in the morning when I take my prednisone by mid PM my system starts to wain as it uses up my cortisol bank!
