What next!: Im feeling really down :-(. Been to doctors... - NRAS
What next!
Hi Alison,
I was told the same but also that it was caused by the steroids I have been taking for over 2 years and once I get back on the infusions and reduce the prednisilone I should be able to stop the diabetic medications. Hopefully like you I just feel more medications but can't manage without them.
I am hoping that when I get back from Canada in Sept they will have sorted out the staffing issues at my clinic and I can start the infusions again.
I have had two flare ups, one the next day I arrived but that was understandable due to all the stairs I had to climb plus the 5 hour time difference. I had another 2 days ago but it didn't last long, just over night. I feel really good today. It is over 30 degrees here so that could be the reason for the flare up.
I hope you can control the diabetes with your diet, I am trying to but finding it a little difficult with staying with family and eating what they are eating apart from sweet things of course.
Take care, hope you feel better and not feeling so down. Sue xx
It's never ending isn't it? At my last check I had raised cholesterol so I was put on simvastatin which I didn't get on with, it affected my muscles so it was changed to atorvastatin, only 10mg & doing fine on that. If you're able to control your diabetes that's great & I hope you can. My h has type 2, thought to have been brought on by either stress (job) or acute pancreatitis when we nearly lost him, nobody is quite sure. It was pretty well controlled until he had CABG when they had to take him off all his meds of course. Now pretty much back to normal except for the odd blip but craving sugary things which isn't the best thing.
I'm sure you'll be fine as long has you keep your saturated fats intake to a minimum & keep to your recommended diet.
Poor you, diet will help with the diabetes and probably the cholesterol too, but statins will certainly move it in the right direction.
Take care

Just a thought alibromo.
Have you had a thyroid blood test done.?
Old Doctors before blood tests knew that high Cholesterol was a pointer to Hypothyroidism (low thyroid) Modern Doctors have forgotten.
Treating one's 'low thyroid' with thyroid medication usually brings the cholesterol levels back into normal range.
Not saying you have a thyroid problem alibromo, but Cholesterol and hypothyroidism have an inverse effect on each other.
Many people with a thyroid problem are being overlooked/missed.
Also Doctors were told to get 10% of patients onto Statins, (bonuses)
American Doctor, Doctor Mercola has a brilliant write up about Statins, in one write up if you can find it, he says he has only ever seen 3 patient who actually needed to take Statins and these patients with a cholesterol over 300+ is who Statins were made for, type in mercola.com cholesterol also type in both 'Hypothyroidism and cholesterol' and search some sites on both (sorry I don't have a particulate link.)
Do google - Scottish Doctor, Malcolm Kendrick's 'The Great Cholesterol Con'
Myths about Diet foods and cholesterol.
Yes i had it tested a few months ago. Thanx for advice xx Alison
Hi Alison,
Sorry to hear your news, I too have diabetes and my GP has prescribed statins.
I have type1, so insulin injections several times a day.
I really struggled with accepting the prescription for statins but I have accepted that although my cholesterol is ok at the moment, taking the statins is a preventative treatment for my future.
Having also been diagnosed with MS and rheumatoid arthritis over the past few years I am keen not to have any other medical issues if I can help it.
As someone mentioned earlier, might be a good thing to get your thyroid function tested, I know it might be another pill but it could make a difference to how you feel.
Good luck with the diet changes and all the best with everything.

With diabetes they tend to treat cholesterol quite aggressively to avoid stuff like strokes and heart attacks. I've found my blood sugars very high since I started on the leflunomide, so be aware that some of the meds (especially prednisone) can elevate your sugars more than they would otherwise be. I get much better control with exercise than with diet Even a little bit seems to make a big difference. I know it sucks to have another thing going on, but this, at least, is something you have a good deal of control over. Best of luck,
Bats
Thank you to everyone for your kind words & advice. Keep well everyone xx Alison
