What will happen if I don't take Folic Acid with Methotrexate?

I am taking Methotrexate (An immune inhibitor) to treat psoriasis. I forgot to take my Folic Acid suppliment three days in a row during the week when I was supposed to. I don't plan on doing it again, but should I be worried?

Morning, I wouldn't worry to much don't think 3 days will make to much difference just make sure you start taking it again, think most people if they where honest have missed a pill or two. xxx

My Rheumy advice....A few days isn't too bad but going without for much longer can cause side effects as the mtx depletes the body of folic acid. Also by taking It regularly you should notice fewer mouth sores, less hair loss and nausea and other common side effects.

Also everyone's dr tells them different things, for example my dr said that my body wasn't breaking down the folic acid properly due to MTHFR mutation. Only about 60-80% of the population can break folic acid down. The rest of us take folinic acid as folic acid is like poison!😊

Don't worry folic acid is prescribed to reduce the side effects pf methotrexate. Missing a few days is not a problem. Some people only take it once a week the day after their methotrexate anyway.

Don't take it the same day as it cancels out the methotrexate.

I think the once a weekers are taking folinic acid instead of folic acid because of the MTHFR mutation which is quite common. Between 60-80% of us can't take folic acid

I forgot to take it for 3 Weeks once! Completely went out of my mind,did feel rotten by that point though but here to tell the tale

I only take it once a week as mu consultant doesn't agree with it being taken six days so it cant be a problem to miss it as you are still taking more than me x

I take my MTX on sat & sun and rheumy says to take folic acid tues wed thurs.

Hi there, i dont think you need to worry too much about missing it, but its best not to as it helps decrease adverse side effects of mtx......best to remember to take it .......cheers

Although I no longer take MTX I never took folic acid in all the years I was on MTX. I tried it alongside mtx and it made me feel ill. I know of one other person who also doesn't take folic acid tabs with their MTX and neither of us were told we would suffer any adverse effects.

May have had the MTHFR mutation like 60-80% of us. Our bodies won't break down folic acid so we need to take folonic acid instead.

Mtx depletes folate, so we need to replace it!

Maybe something for your friend to talk to her doc about if she's still on it😊

Doctors are dumb because the medication shuts down the bodies ability to breakdown folic acid. It’s useless. Look into folinic acid, it skips the step blocked by the medication.
