Folic acid dosage when taking methotrexate

First post as a newbie! Just wondering if anyone else who has been taking folic acid for years has suddenly started suffering with what seems like a sore tongue associated with acid reflux?

Welcome bigjantart, I hope you find this site useful. I have been taking folic acid for a long time but can’t say I’ve had a sore tongue/acid reflux from it. I have acid reflux but it’s from taking diclofenac and precedes the folic acid taking.

A lot of people on here take folic acid so hopefully some will reply to you soon.

I took FA six days a week for 7 years..the only thing I noticed was a slight metallic taste..but never knew if it was the Mtx or the FA..but as I was feeling good taking both ...I just stuck with both.

Do you take a PPI for acid reflux?

I never had that from taking synthetic folic acid for almost 2.5 years. Changed from MTX so no longer need folic acid.

Hiya & welcome bigjantart. I've been taking 5mg folic acid for 10 years, twice weekly for 4 years, the last 6 years 6 days weekly but it's never caused a sore tongue. What dose are you on & how often do you take it? It's just if you're taking it in combination with MTX too little can cause a sore tongue, just as it can cause mouth ulcers, we're trying to replenish what MTX is depleting. If you're not supplementing enough it could be a symptom, your body telling you you're not taking enough. We can't take too much, our body naturally gets rid of what it doesn't need.

If it continues do seek proper medical advice, it may be unrelated to folic acid.

I have the same. For me it's caused by MTX and consultant upped my folic acid to help. Best if you call RA nurse and explain.

Hi,

MTX use to give me a sore mouth. Gargling with saline 5 x a day for 2 days after taking MTX got rid of the problem. It was a pharmacist that advised me to do this. Then my body got use to the MTX and now the mouth issues only return when I am rundown.

Hi, been on folic acid fir three years not had any sore tongue, but had ulcers on tongue & mouth due to MXT. Hope it clears up.
