Hi new to this site I was diagnosed with RA ten months ago and am being treated accordingly .but today. my doctor told me I have also tested positive for gout

Is there anyone else out there testing positive for both as would like to learn more of what lies ahead.

Hello

Every now and then I get gout although it seems to clear on its own, last time I had an outbreak must have been five years ago

I have not been tested for gout, but have had 2 episodes of it in my hand... excruciating pain, I hope never to have another. Only lasted about 24 hours, and I was given naproxin for it

Poor you having both. My late dad suffered badly from gout - he used to be in agony and we felt so sorry for him. He got a drug that kept it in check though and was advised to avoid certain foods and drinks (rich in urea such as nuts and alcohol I think) as I don't recall him having many problems with it as he got older.

Hi welcome. My hubby has frequent flare ups of gout and attacks can be in his feet ankles knees and hands. It is a debilitating desees is regarded by health professionals as the most painful of the arthritic family. The reason for gout is that your body cannot deal with purines and this goes into the urethra but for some reason your bidy cannit get rid of it. It them forms crystals in the joints...usually in the early hrs if the morning and you can wake with extreme pain. Following this your affected joint is swollen and unbearable to the touch...even a sheet causes pain. My hubby suffers boyts every 3 to 4 weeks. Sometime lasting for 5 ir 6 dats. He was given coltrachine to fight it whenit is active and has allupurinol to take one a day fir life. The idea being once your flareup has gone down you candrop ofc the coltrchine and then go on the allupurinol. Unfirtunately hubby is still on both as as soon as he stopscol he getsaflareup. Gp says if it suits uou can stayon both .....although other drs disagree. Hiwever hedoes whatever hecannit to have the psin. You will need to learn abiut purines and avoid foids with high cincentrations of that. Alcohol is notband but beer is best not to have because of the hops hugh in purines. Largers and wine us ok...in cirrect quantity. Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

Hi sorryto go on but before my hubby was properly diagnosed he was stared off on diclofenic and after newspaper outcry about that med may leadto stroke....he was put on naproxen........sadly warning about diclofenic came to late for him after taking is for 10 years he had a stroke jyst prior to his 5 7th birthday my adviceis if you gp says you have gout insist on having the corre tbloodtests and on confirmation ask to be referred to a rhumy. GPs are ehat they are general drs and not specialists. Good luck
