I keep getting pins and needles in my left hand
I had this problem in both hands/wrists few yrs ago. Had carpal tunnel surgery and the relief was amazing. Now several yrs later I have been having severe pain in hands and have been told I need more sophisticated wrist surgery due to bone erosions. However the carpal tunnel surgery gave me instant relief which lasted approx 5 yrs, so it was worth having, lynda x
I developed this then numbness in my right then left hand. I was a total butter fingers and a lot of pain in lower arms.Took a while to diagnose but eventually neurologist said was carpal tunnel. Although I was put down for an operation by the time it came through the symptoms had resolved completely. There was interestingly a difference of opinion between the rheumy and neurologist with the former saying that it was caused by the RA coming on, the inflammation in the wrist compressing the nerves. Symptoms started in August but had completely gone by July with no treatment so both sides a bit mystified. So fingers crossed it will not come back.
Hello
When you see your GP tell him the problem. This could be nurological pain.

Hello Bob, I read with interest your many answers and find them most informative. May I ask, do you have a medical background as you seem to have great knowledge? Anne
Hello Anne
No medical training, although I have been on very many NHS courses and been involved in many voluntary situations that deal with the NHS and charities. Have also been involved with LINK and now Healthwatch, also I have been chronic disabled for thirty years.
Also I am on Patients Participation Groups in GP surgeries. Normally specialize on Mental Health and Dementia and the mental health of Patients in pain.

Gosh, deep respect! Anne
could be several things this
1st one did you sleep badly on you neck at all this can sometimes be a trapped nerve from the neck the shooting pain is caused by the nerve trying to untrap itself
2nd you could have a trapped nerve in the elbow portion this one is the most common cause trapped nerve in the human body and we dont know why this happens (you may feel this in the small finget and next finger to it along with the middle portion bettween the thumb and the finger .aand its always the left hand....
3rd could be inflamation in the wrist area clamping the nerve see if it goes under warm water massage.
4th BEST thing to do ask for nerve conduction study a good one will tel you within 10 mins of the test.

I have this in both wrists though the right hand is the worst. Constantly wakes me up, numbness, pins & needles. I also get it holding a pen, my phone, steering wheel etc. I did mention it to the rheumy nurse on one of my apts with her & she referred me to our physio dept who gave me wrist splints which I wear at night. I always wear the right one , not always needed for the left hand. If I have trouble in the day to wear them then. So its worth talking to your Gp /Rheumy team, hope you get sorted. Rie x
Hi,this morning I phoned my Nurse & left a message, explaining the numbness in my pionting finger(next to my left thumb)the back of the nail area is completely numb & thin.
Really annoying,I tend to rub it all the time!!!!
Just had a call from the Nurse, said she rang my consultant, who says its because of swelling in the hand & nerves. Also if its not discoloured I'll be ok.Go to see her 27thJan,if any more news I'll let u know Anne xx
