Methotrexate break over Christmas ?

This will be my first Xmas on all the RA meds and I'm really not looking forward to it. How much harm would it do to give the MTX a miss this week so I don't feel sick and can enjoy a few drinks ?

Hello

Sadly if you stopped taking them it may reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

Also if I cannot stop why should you LOL, LOL

Merry Christmas and happy healthy New Year

Hi jw07, I'm not much help. I have only been on it for a month, so haven't a clue. As yet, I am not suffering anything other than loss of appetite and insomnia. I have completely lost the desire to drink alcohol at all.

I take my MTX on a Tuesday evening, with the Folic acid on a Wednesday morning. I read somewhere that taking it in the evening, means that you sleep through the worst of the nausea, which helps some people.

Over the years I occasionally skipped a dose - ie a family wedding, a special holiday and Christmas - without any harm done. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me - wouldn't skip it regularly though. It has a long half-life, so it stays in the system for about 3 months after you finish taking it - that's why you can have to wait at least 3 months before starting another DMARD. Cece x

Hi

Its my first Christmas on RA meds too, MTX injection is due Christmas day and I am giving it a miss this week. I checked with my Rheumy nurse and she said that's fine, I may have no adverse effects or I may have a bit of a flare just have to wait and see. I am happy to give alcohol a miss most of the time but I really would like a few drinks over Christmas, I will see in the New Year alcohol free though as I wouldn't want to push it!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I've skipped before, or shifted the day so I can have a night on the lash. You should be fine because it sticks around in the body for so long. It takes a while to start working, and then a while to stop.

Happy Christmas,

Dotty xx

Hi

My mtx was due today this evening. We are hosting a chrimbo eve swaray, so I moved it forward to last night, so I could have a glass of wine this evening. I swell up when I miss it, so I try not to, but do move it around where possible.

Missing the odd week is ok, but I would not do it on a regular basis. If in doubt speak to your rheumy team.

Good luck

my 1st Christmas too. took mine last night so will have a couple of drinks over Christmas. doc said as long as you don't go mad it's ok , but other docs seem to have different ideas. I have now developed a horrible metallic taste in my mouth and my tongue feels weird , I gather this is a known side effect , but haven't had it before ( on week 7 now ) great timing ! my Christmas present from the MTX fairy !
