Instead of my usual chit chat I have a question in the last two weeks my left thumb has started to click and be very painful. Should I be worried has anyone else had this strange thing happen to them.

Ps on a frivolous note here is a photo of the sandles I got in a sale needless to say I cant wear them their too high boo hoo.

Hello BOB here

Yes I get this quite regular in my had, the joint jerks and will click, This is Trigger Finger. Treatment possible manipulation and the usual tablets.

I understand you take MXT and Sulphersalazine that would assist as would injections if really bad, sometimes it may be best left alone, mind that is my opinion, not a Doctor.

You will need to discuss this with your GP

All the best

BOB

I had that a few months ago. At my last rheumy appointment I told them about it. He had a look but thought it was just aging and more osteo related than RA. Took x-rays of my hands and nothing there of concern. But maybe worth you getting it checked out next time you have an appt.

I'm the original rice krispies woman with the number of joints that click and crack, sometimes very loudly. I know its really common in spondyloarthritis, not sure about RA

I get this on and off with all my finger joints. Sometimes they just click and sometimes I can't close or open them past a particular point, particularly if I have been holding something tight for a while. (painting, sawing wood ,etc) usually goes if I stretch my fingers a few times. guess it is just joint wear but RA nurse didn't comment when I told her.

Well I dont do sawing wood but do sometimes paint. It is so painful and a bit scary when the thumb wont go back. Comforting to know others have it too. If that makes sense.

Does hurt! Don't force the thumb just move back and forwards over the movement you do have and I find it frees it up.

Morning, yes I have a clicky thumb and also had clicky fingers,my dr said it was trigger finger where I was inflamed around the joints, much better now after a year on mtx,but my thumb still clicks sometimes even now.and I'm loving them shoes !!! I have many pairs sitting in my wardrobe like that, but as RA hit my feet first last yr I sadly cannot wear them YET !! I won't say anymore as I'm hoping too one day :))) take care Michelle xxx

Hi Sharon,

I have the second finger of my left hand that does the same click. There's continual pain all the way along the joint. Will just have to be patient, as appointments with the rheumy happen only every six months, thanks to cut backs in the NHS.

Best of luck, and take care, Zannie.X

This clicking issue is starting in your neck/arm. You need to stretch/move both. A competent massage therapist can massage your neck all the way down your arm and loosen it so it all can be put back in place. Most likely your elbow and wrist need to be "popped" back in and then the thumb pulled to it is in the right place again. Go to massage therapist or ask your chiropractor. This is NOT a steroid/surgery issue to start. I am frustrated the medical community it telling everyone to immobilize it, etc. You need to stretch/massage/ put it back in right place. Will it be uncomfortable? Yes. But not as bad as not having your hand work.
