Hello, I am new here and am on my third day as a non-smoker!!

I was just 'viewing' here until my membership became active but found it a good way to distract me and encorage me when cravings started.

I am going cold turkey but have some gums if I get desperate.

Any advice or helpful stories appreciated!

Thanks

Kimberley x

Thank you all so much for your replies.

Perhaps I should give the book a try as my mood completely turns and i am absolutely horrible to be around when I have a craving! My poor bf last night took the worst of it after my day of it building up. Felt terrible about it about 5 mins later.

Its so strange some of the symptoms coming off cigs has on you.

But then, cigs were my companion i turned to when stressed, bored, drunk, socialising, goes well with a cuppa tea or glass of wine and now..its gone!.. so its like saying goodbye to a friend.. forever?!!

Does that make sense???!!

im not a total nutter i promise :-)

Hi Kimberley :)

You're definitely not a nutter - we all felt like that at first!!

Was probably a total nightmare to be around and we spent years training ourselves to associate everything with smoking so that's tough to break *but* you can do it!!

Don't think about forever for now, just about today - tomorrow can wait but today you've chosen not to smoke.

Thank you all, wow everyone here seems really friendly and helpful!

I thought the craving for my morning cig would be the worst one but actually its around 3pm and 7pm.

Ooohh and now... just had lunch... would love one!!!

I feel like because I havent smoked i need to do something naughty to balance things out.. hehehe

But i wont.. maybe a chocolate bar later..

:-)

It really helps here, don't think I could have managed without this place :)

You will find some times give you strong cravings *but* when you see them for what they are - the nasty nicotine demon trying to make you smell again - they get a lot better!!

And when you can go out without having to get soaked in the rain having a fag, or not have to hurry meals 'cos you "need" a smoke it feels so liberating it's amazing!!

Have some choccie if it helps - no problem at all, if you can quit the fags you can deal with a bit of extra weight later :)

Oh, don't know if it'll help you or not but when I got strong craves, I made a "cigarette" out of a post-it note and "smoked" that and believe it or not it did the trick

Gemma-Lou your post made me giggle. Thanks :-)

One of the biggest things for me is stinking of fags and even after 3 days I cant stand it if someone gets on the train stinking of smoke. I cant believe I used to smell like that everyday!!

Looking round now for a post-it note...

I made lots of people giggle walking round the office with me "fag" lol :p

Know exactly what you mean about the smell, it's foul and it's not a nice thought that we smelled like that!! It's good that you can't stand it though, 'cos its another great reason not to have another!!

Oh, and I've saved a fortune on body spray since I stopped too - no need to spray myself every time to "get rid of" the smell :p

Haha! Yes!! And my hands will be in better shape because I had this obsession with washing my hands after every single cig to get rid of the smell! I think the scrubbing aged my paws more than the effects of smoking did.

Kim

A very warm welcome to the forum my love. IMO the first few days of quitting are the worst. You are doing fab.

My advice would be please try not to look too far ahead, baby steps.

And be good to yourself, excercise, nice walks, then rest, drink plenty water, grapefruit juice, read, watch some good films, whatever you enjoy!

I had hand gel for that, haven't touched it since and it probably didn't do my fingers much good :(

Yet another bonus for stopping!!
