I think people are basically helpful and can be very encouraging. Yesterday I got into work to find someone had left me a bag full of patches and nicotine gum they no longer needed. It really made my day and made me feel that this quit is meant to be.
Also I think that it helps others who are just thinking about quitting to see you go through the process and survive it.

I'm sure on the whole you are right, many people have been surprised at how supportive friends/family have been, though I've also read others saying that smoking friends have been critical or attempted to put them off quitting.
No doubt there are one or two small minded selfish people in every community but you'd like to think that the majority want what's best for others.....
and also if you fail, which lets face it lots of us do, then it makes answering the questions about it that much harder, where as if youve never told anyone they never even knew you had tried.
But you are right that it does give you more incentive to stay quit to avoid that kind of questioning!
I agree Sue I was like you and have had nothing but support on and off the forum, even from people who dont know me but when they found out I have quit they always ask was it difficult and I say NO well not too bad, keep on keeping off and it will be not long before you are a member of the Penthouse where the booze is free.
free booze, did you say?? And is there chocolate in the penthouse?
I never made any grand announcement, i waited for people to notice and I can say i've had nothing but support and encouragement. I work on my oen in an office and the only interaction I get away from meetings etc is when i go outside to the smoking area. Because I don't go out there as frequently now, i am missing out on my gossip and the opportunity to find out what is happening in the business. My boss, the MD of the company and a smoker, has commented that he misses me and he joked i should start up again just so we can catch up every day! People are interested as to how I have done it and how hard it is and i am happy to share my experience so far. I thought people would tell me all about their failed attempts but, as i said, i have had nothing but support.
It was a colleague who quit after being a lifelong smoker who really inspired me to quit myself. He retired today and i thanked him for that. Probably one of the best things anyone can do for another person.
