Hi Everyone,

My name's Austyn and i'm 22, just thought i would introduce myself.

Hope you don't mind me joining this site i haven't really looked around properly yet because its almost 3:30am! But I was today thinking to myself that i wanted to quit(I have been telling myself to quit for a long time now while i am still youngish..:p) I have kinda gone all or nothing cold turkey! And will probeley have to get help with the doctor next week sometime when i get around to it. Hope i can make it that far.

My one main problem is i still live at home with my mum and shes a heavy smoker, and she never listens to or repects anyones wishes about smoking. I have tryed to quit before and have asked her not to smoke around me but she did, and it made me want one when i last tryed i made it just over a week but this time i'm going to tell myself over and over not to do it and put a note in my pocket that i will carry around with me at all times and when ever i feel like one i will look at this to give me the reasons of why to quit, for my 1st step. I haven't thought of a plan B yet, will have to see about that when i see the doctor!

I guess my question to you people is has anyone of you quit when there has been other people around you smoking and how hard will it be? I know it's not going to be easy even if other people wasn't smoking around you i would just like to hear other peoples views on this. :) Sorry for the long rant, and thanks for listening to me!

Ozzy ;)

Hi Austyn,

welcome to the forum..... this is a great place to come not only for support but also education. KNOW about why you smoke, read and learn as much as possible and your quit can and will be quite easy..... sit and sulk and miss that odd fag and you will probably smoke soon enough again...... don't envy your mom when you see her smoke but realize that she has to run and light up on the hour to feed her addiction..... that is why she smokes, that is why we all smoked..... nothing more, nothing less..... understand and believe that and always have in your mind the great benefits of quitting (mainly the freedom you gain) and you have the winning formula of a successful quit..... you are only 22, too! How I hope you get off it and have a smoke free life!!!

My OH quit and continued dating me for years and years while I puffed away..... he never minded that I smoked and it didn't affect his quit... he told me it never was a problem (although I know I must have smelled ) It is all in the mind...... here's your choice:watch your mom and envy her for the fag she is having or understanding the truth of craving and needing nicotine and how simple it is actually to get off it...... read up on the sites others will post here for you.... Welcome again and good luck to you!

Hi Austyn :)

Welcome to the forum and well done on the decision to quit possibly one of the most important you will ever make and you will be losing nothing but you will regain control of your life and that has to be good

You will find all the help and support you need on here as we all help each other just like a family we are here for you every step of the way cheering the good days and sympathiseing with the bad but the good far outweigh the bad

Read the posts on here you will find a lot of tips and advice and in the signatures of a lot you will find links to other sites just click on them Here are 2 I find very good to start you off whyquit.com and woofmang.com Read, read and then read some more as the more you read and learn about why you smoked and about your addiction the easier your quit will be

There are lots of people on here who have quit with members of the family still smoking, some find it hard and some don't hope that helps but for sure some of them will be around later to tell you more

For myself I live alone but all my friends smoke and it didn't bother me at all being around them when they lit up

Best Wishes

Marg xx

Welcome

Hi Austyn, Welcome to the forum & well done on your decision to quit. My hubby goes outside to smoke when we are at home but still smokes in the car  To be honest it really does not bother me. I think when we quit we are always worried being around other smokers will be really hard & we will want one. It is not nearly as bad as you think it will be. You will be fine I am sure :D. Each time you get through a dody situation without smoking you can be so proud of yourself & know you have taken another step well on the road to staying quit for good. Hugs. Gaynor. xx

Hi well done for deciding to stop smoking, never regret it and always believe you are doing the right thing.

I find it very difficult being near someone smoking. My husband still smokes but never near me nor in the house, but you live in Mums house I suspect, so it's really Mum's rules. If she sees you are genuine perhaps you could negotiate a deal that she smokes in certain places but maybe you will be flat hunting. Just think with the money you save from not smoking you could use that to pay towards it :D

The others have mentioned to you about addiction, so try to understand while you are trying to stop yours, Mum is still hooked. Read lots in the links they have suggested, there you will find out about nicotine addiction and it will help loads.

Good luck.

Jackie

Wow thank you everyone for replying to me and thank you bella for the links i will check them out later! I'm finding it really hard today :( Gonna be tuff i think, i had such broken sleep last night for some reason. Is this another affect of giving up with broken sleep? I have also drank countless amounts of cranberry juice also, to try and help the cravings and all in all it seems to work! I would just like to thank everyone once again for replying to me and your encouragement helps so much! I will post how my full day went later! :D

Hi Austyn :D

Yes sleeping badly is due to quitting and caused by more oxygen getting into the blood and therefore the brain than you're used to, it won't last for long though, when your body realises you're not feeding it a diet of chemicals anymore it will strart to heal itself which it does very well and fairly quickly from the abuse we have given it

Cranberry juice will help a lot and so will water for some reason it works as well, I don't like Cranberry and drank pints of water like it was going out of fashion

Post often to let us know how you're doing, have a rant, moan whatever we really don't mind on here, we've all been there and done it OK

There's always someone around to help you, it's what we all do after all that's why we're here so just yell OK

Love

Marg xxxxxxx

Hi Austyn,

Well done on your decision to quit. I read yesterday about fruit and veg juice is a great way to help with the cravings, so I dug out my juicer bought the entire range of fruit and veg from Tescos :D and have been juicing all day, have also been nibbling away on Sunflower Seed (may turn into a parrot soon) which are also supposed to help with cravings - I can honestly say that the cravings have not been as bad today as they normally are - some days I'm like a women posessed - children run screaming from me :D

So, if you fancy trying that then give it a go :)

Welcome Austyn

Well done on your quit so far. Just take it one day at a time it takes about 72 hours for the nicotine to leave the bady. So the worse time is the first 3/4 days but then things start to improve. Have a good read as the others have said. when you get a crave do some thing walk read come here and post and before you know the crave has passed. xxxxxxxxxxxx
