OxyContin

I received a kidney transplant 11 months ago and received a knee replacement this week. I know transplant patients are supposed to steer clear of NSAID. My orthopedic surgeon told me OxyContin would be ok for pain for a couple of weeks. I knew Tramadol wouldn’t suffice for pain. The Oxy has helped a lot. I couldn’t find anywhere on GOOGLE that said it was ok for a short period, but I had to have a knee. Anybody have experience with this? Please don’t hit me with scare tactics. I just want facts, hopefully from someone that’s done this and a year later they’re receiving good labs. Thanks

I was given oxy and dilaudid alternatively with tylenol in the first month after transplant for extreme pain, and then moved to just tylenol. Should be fine..

Yes I have taken it for a short period and no problem. The addiction properties of the drug is not likely to adversely affect you as long as you follow the usage instructions ONLY. I hope you become pain free really soon!

My hubby (with a transplant) always clears his meds with his transplant center or local nephrologist. Simply place a call. It's worth the peace of mind. Our transplant center intervened twice - replacing his dentist's antibiotic prescription with another antibiotic and removing his primary doctor's prescription (which involved prednisone). You may have a notebook from your transplant center that carries preapproved drugs so you may want to check there first.

It should be fine. I'm really surprised that you wouldn't have discussed it with your transplant nephrologist though. I discuss any new meds or vaccines with my transplant dr but I've also had surgeries since the transplant (I'm about 5&1/2 years out) and my transplant nephrologist always partners with the surgical team to advise them on how much they should push as far as fluids before, during, and after the surgery and also what tests to run when so we can be assured kidney function wasn't affected.

Hi, Congratulations on the transplant! My transplant was 18 yrs ago (as of Nov 6th). Since then I had two back surgeries and thus needed lots of pain meds. I was always prescribed Oxy. This was approved by my nephrologist. It did not affect my kidney in any way. My numbers always remained stable. I wish you a speedy recovery and much success with your transplant!

Pain management had me on oxy prior to my transplant and my transplant team was ok with that. Post transplant I was still on oxy and my nephrologist was ok with that as well. Prior to my transplant I have had 3 major back surgeries and have been in chronic pain every since. However, the one problem that oxy is causing me is severe GERD. According to my gastroenterologist oxy relaxes the muscles of the esophagus and allows the stomach acid to go back up. The problem had gotten so severe for me that I went off the oxy permanently, since for me the gerd was worse than the back pain. Fast forward 2.5 years post transplant. Since March of 2023 I have had four more back surgeries with one more still to come. I tried to stay away from the oxy but the pain final wore me down and I had to go back on. I am scheduled to try a spinal cord stimulator to help control the pain. Hopefully, it will be successful and I can once again get off the oxy. And by the way the cursed GERD has returned.
