Tacrolimus levels while taking anti-fungal

I developed thrush and being treated with Clotrimazole tablets. I got my monthly blood work and my tacrolimus levels (which had been normal) doubled. They think that it was taking the Clotrimazole. So it was a drug interaction that caused it. Anyone else have any issue like this?

I got this off of the app drugs.com because my transplant center expects me to figure out my own drug interactions. "Clotrimazole may significantly increase the blood levels of tacrolimus" so it is from the antifungal. You can use natural remedies to help with thrush just google natural remedies for thrush in mouth. I have to be careful and make sure I brush my tongue or I will develop thrush. Make sure to change your toothbrush too and to make sure your tooth brush dried completely because if it stays moist it will grow thrush too. If you use a non electric tooth brush go to dollar store and buy tooth brushes their so you can change them frequently while you have thrush. You can soak your brush head in one of the remedies or mouthwash in between brushes to help. Hope this helps.

Thanks - just talked to my nurse coordinator and she said the same thing. It was the Clotrimazole that a caused it. They are putting me on Nystatin now and recheck tacrolimus on Friday. Thanks for the advice too about the toothbrush. The little things means a lot I've found in the last year of my transplant. I'm 1 year and 1 month post kidney transplant. So far so good. this was a shocker for sure. I guess I need to check everything as far as medical or drugs. Appreciate the help! Have a great rest of the week.

Congratulations on your year and 1 month anniversary! Happy belated kidney birthday! The app I use is called Drugs.com and you use the drug interaction to see what drugs interact with each other. I actually will be 5 years on the 16th of this month and it has been a crazy ride. I have a medical background but I learn so much everyday! Also just like you got thrush you can get excessive bacterial build up on your skin so once or twice a week use regular dial soap and if you want you can use what ever you normally use after you use the dial soap. If you have any questions about anything just ask me. I have learned a lot of tricks to help make life easier! Also, watch your high fructose intake that causes high uric acid which it don't take much of that to raise it. Also unshielded no salt pumkin seeds a handful a day raises your magnesium level! I won't do a magnesium infusion they make me and everyone feel like crap! So my doctor said pumpkin seeds! It works!

Totally agree with doing your own research at times. It is fortunate it is so readily available today. The other part of it is having a doctor who respects your input. My doctor was giving me an antibiotic for possible thrush but my white tongue was actually a sign of dehydration. Another emergency doctor defined my cause of sudden neuropathy as anxiety when it was caused by problem with metabolism problem from a gluten free diet. Anxiety may inflame neuropathy but does not cause it. The internet has probably saved lives when it comes to medical treatments as long as the resources are reputable.

What I don't get is why are these transplant people always reactive instead of proactive they make you grow through all this s*** when they know that it's contradictive with tacro so put you on the other stuff first why put you on that crap that's going to double your att levels it just pisses me off they do this all the time

I noticed my hubby (with the transplant) had thrush too a few weeks ago. He self-treated it using mouthwash, etc. He didn't know what else and didn't want to go on meds. Really appreciate the replies here. They've been useful!

Hello and Congratulations on your 1 yr Transplant anniversary whoo Hoo! I am a 7 year Kidney Transplant Survivor and have learned to always always make sure new docs know I am on anti rejection meds and if prescribing anything that I have to check w my transplant doctor first. The one time, I was in the hospital and sent home w a RX that he said had no contraindications, my transplant doctor caught it and said no way. I was so mad! This is our life we’re dealing with, so upsetting. So yes always always check w nephrologist/transplant doc before any new meds. So sorry that happened. Take care!

You're absolutely right in advising to get approval everything through the transplant nephs. Antifungal meds can be deadly for transplanted people. I know a lady who lost her hubby, with a kidney transplant, to one of those meds. He had simple toenail fungus.
