Hi,I used to have haemodialysis so hopefully I can answer these.
Over the 3-4 years I was on dialysis, I never knew any of the people in my unit to get fluid in their lungs as a result of treatment. Now, thats not to say lung infections aren't something you shouldn't worry about. I had too many to count, but this was due to me swallowing water while drinking sometimes or breathing in food while eating due to muscles being weaker as my body failed.
If anything, I used to carry excess fluid around my lungs because thats just where it went when my kidneysstopped wotking, so dialysis actually made it easier for me to breathe.
As for blood infections (or sepsis), your dialysis nurse will know all the symptoms to look out for- it's drummed in, and things like fever and confusion are easily picked up before starting and pre-dialysis bloods can be taken to check for infectionsif you're not feeling well. There is no risk of blood contamination from other patients as everything from the tubes to the filters (anything that touches blood) is completely thrown away and replaced between patients. Hepatitis B vaccinations are recommended on dialysis, but I can't personally speak on those because I'm not allowed vaccines for other medical reasons.
Obviously if infections are a major concern to you, always reach out to a doctor or nurse who can give you a lot more information and reassurance than I can
Good luck on dialysis!
Thank you so much for your sharing all experience that is great helpful!
Wishing you all the best
