My baseline creatinine was 1.8, but since April it has gone up, and is now at 2.7. Last week I was admitted to my transplant center hospital for 4 days, a biopsy was done that ruled out rejection. I don't think I'm hydrating like I should, but I don't know what's wrong. The surgeon said my kidney does have some changes due to my diabetes, and I need to keep working hard to control blood sugar. He said 2.7 may be my new baseline, but to me that's too high. I've only had my kidney since Feburary 2019, and to be honest I am scared. I honestly don't think i could do dialysis again. I could really use some well wishes.
Creatinine increase: My baseline... - Kidney Transplant
Creatinine increase
I am doing peritoneal dialysis so I don't know very much about transplants but I just wanted to wish you well. All you can do is follow the advice given by your doctor and of course try and keep yourself as healthy as you can be. Can you drink more water if you are concerned about hydration. Hopefully it will settle down soon.
Hello Kimosabi1961. Your fear is understandable. I am almost 2 1/2 yrs post transplant. I was admitted to the hospital about 5 times within the 1st yr for creatinine spikes, low hemoglobins and insertion of drains into my transplanted kidney. It’s scary. But there is definitely something to fight for. First and foremost... hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. When the dr first said to me drink 4-5L a day I thought it to be crazy. My creatinine after transplant dropped to .9 then it went up to 4.2. He kept pushing me on the water/Gatorade and truly my baseline is now between 1.2-1.4. Hydration is half the battle. Do whatever you need to do to control your diabetes, your transplant is worth every bit of effort you make. Life is precious and the gift of transplant is even more precious. Praying for your continued health. Good luck and stay firm on your Path to health and happiness 🙏🏻
You won't find a more empathetic group than all of us with transplants as we completely understand why you're scared. I get scared anytime my creatinine increases. But it does sound good that you're not rejecting the kidney and that you're receiving good care. Sending you my prayers and positive thoughts.
My son had a size mismatch transplant in November 2018 and his creatinine baseline is 2.0-2.3. Hydration helps but some medications cause his increase and now he is pre-diabetic due to anti-rejection meds and that can affect level as well. He cannot do a biopsy due to being on Warfarin, but they do an Allosure DNA test to check for rejection. So far so good. You can control some factors but not all. Just do your best, as I am sure you do. Best of health to you going forward. Stay strong, Warrior.
Kimosabi1961, I pray your creatinine goes down to your baseline, my baseline is 1.8 but mine increased but I wasn’t getting my water in like I should so hydrate, hydrate, hydrate & keep your diabetes under control, keep listening to your Drs. and hang in there Kimosabi1961
I'm diabetic & 8 yrs post transplant. My baseline was 1.5 then after 3 rejections in the 1st yr.&1/2, my creatinine went to 1.9. Then after 6 &1/2 yrs, The BK virus came back. My creatinine is now 2.6. My donor had the virus, but I did not. HYDRATE WELL. I check my blood sugar level at least 4 times a day. I follow a low carb diet, good carbs only. Idid 2&1/2 yrs on dialysis. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!
Hang in there! The best advice will be from your transplant team. In general drink as much water as you possibly can. It does make a huge difference. If your center has a dietitian ask to meet with them. That person can make sure your diet is appropriate. Exercise and keep your spirts up!
Thanks to everyone!
By any chance are you drinking green tea? Supposed to be good for you but it does increase my Creatine so if you drinking it stop. Think about diet or foot creams what changed? Check it out and drink water if you don’t like it add lemon and sweet n low but get your water down and exercise a simple 25 minute walk will do it. Make yourself it worth your kidney. Good luck and talk to your kidney tell it it’s got to hang in there and you’ll be better to it. Believe me it works.
