Anyone know of a Rehab or Skilled Care nursing that does peritoneal dialysis?

My son and I are caretakers for my ex-husband. He is on peritoneal dialysis (has done well on it for 18 months!), and ended up in the hospital with COVID a month ago. It was a long haul, but he has pulled through. However, he is now significantly weaker than he was before Covid, so he will need to be discharged to a rehab or skilled care nursing facility, rather than the assisted living facility he was living at.

Our problem is that we cannot find a rehab or skilled care nursing facility that does peritoneal dialysis. He cannot do hemodialysis due to a heart condition, so either we find a facility that does PD, or he just dies without dialysis.

So, does anyone know of a rehabilitation or skilled care nursing facility in Pennsylvania or a nearby state that provides peritoneal dialysis? Any suggestions/possibilities would be greatly appreciated!

Such a horrible dilemma to be in. Hard to believe that you can’t find help. Will his insurance cover a nurse to come to his facility and do the peritoneal dialysis? There has to be some facility that can help him. Any help from kidney associations?

Wish I had some better suggestions. I wish you all the best. There has to be help!

If he was able to do PD in his assisted living place before, why can't the machine transfer to where he is going so he can continue doing it?

FYI, I'm no expert on PD, haven't done it yet as I'm just at a stage of gathering information. His nephrologist should make a referral to where he can get services.

Thanks to veryone who has replied so far - it really is a dilemma.

We (his family) were doing the peritoneal dialysis at his assisted living facility, which was only 10 minutes from our house. It involves hooking him up every night and unhooking him every morning - the treatment takes 10-12 hours overnight. Unfortunately, none of the nearby rehab facilities or nursing homes will let us come in and do it nor will they do it themselves (legally, if family is not doing it, it has to be an RN). That's why I am searching for a facility that does it, since we can't travel to one that is far away twice a day....

Hi. I was a healthcare administrator for many years. Our patients from our skilled nursing facilities would take a wheelchair van to the dialysis center or hospital for their PD treatments. The facility arranged transportation to and from the treatment facility.
