I am 72 with stage 4 ckd. My egfr is 29 and i am diabetic. I am on brenzavvy and low dose blood pressure med. I work out and feel good... a little tired at times. Any suggestions for raising egfr. My doctor wants to do a kidney biopsy to see if there's any underlying calls other than diabetes. Any suggestions?

I feel for you. My hubby, a T2D, went through kidney at age 70, went on dialysis, and received a transplant a year later. He's now 74 and doing well. It's interesting that your doctor wants to have a kidney biopsy done on you. This makes me think that perhaps he suspects you have an autoimmune condition that might have led to both your diabetes and kidney situation. In my husband's case, it was clear that his diabetes was the sole reason so no biopsy was ordered. If you do have an autoimmune condition, treatment for that will likely improve your eGFR. In any event, it's good to check your lab reports and see what is flagged. Then, make diet choices accordingly. The Western diet isn't very healthy for anyone; it's best to go plant based (fresh fruits and veggies) and go with white meats. Those processed (manufactured) foods have lots of artificial substances along with carbs and sugars which are harmful, particularly for diabetics. Because you have high blood pressure, sodium may need to be addressed, too. However, before taking action on a diet, check with your doctor or dietician to make sure what you're doing is okay. Once you're on a good diet, that too can raise your eGFR. Should your eGFR drop to 20 or below, make sure to ask about a pre-emptive kidney transplant - sometimes one can completely skip over dialysis by getting a new one. I truly hope that your doctor figures out what is affecting your kidneys and that your situation stabilizes or even improves. This community cares about you, I know I do.
