I'm 3 years post transplant and wondered if anyone has dyed their hair. I'm talking about the wash in dyes that last around 6 weeks. I don't know if the anti rejection drugs would effect my hair
Hair dye: I'm 3 years post transplant and... - Kidney Disease
Hair dye
I have dyed my hair twice since my Transplant last July. Now I use permanent and not the washout. I did bring it up with my doc and my stylist and while I'm losing some hair, my hair is healthy and they both told me I wasn't hurting anything. But doc did say the less I do to my hair the better which is true. But I'm a redhead (doesn't matter if it's dye) and space out the coloring as long as I can.
Hi there, just a question as you are a post transplant and it's in regards to your hair. I'm stage 5 my Gfr was 4 when I went on dialysis which was Oct 2023. But my hair over especially the last 2 years has been dreadful it's, got really thin and brittle and just isn't the same what so ever. Does this improve after transplant or have you found that it gets worse or stays the same?I know it's only hair but my hair was the remaining thing that made me feel like I was still me, unfortunately I've not dealt with this disease as I'm sure most have very well. And when the hair started to fall out as a bit I just thought I can't do this any more. I mean if it happens it happens but at least I've got the heads up (no pun intended on that)
Thanks for listening, much apreciated.

I'm sorry to hear about your hair falling out, it must be awful. Keep positive, are you on PD or Hemo? Hopefully you get a transplant. I was extremely lucky cause I got a transplant during the second half of lockdown cause many hospitals in England weren't doing transplants so organs were sent up North otherwise I would probably still be on PD.
I am on HD. The stress of diaylsis it's hard, it annoys me when you explain it to people what is and what happens and they say well it can't be that bad your sat down for 3.5 hours.... It is not that straight forward.Yes the hair thing, I have heard a few people experiencing the hair situation but I was just seeing if it did change after the transplant?
Thank you so much for your replt

Hey Roorook I ask my kidney doctor yesterday if dialysis can make me hair fall out he said maybe but not likely but could but could be ithercreasonsbibgas beautiful long hair no but so thin on half of I lost if I take my fingers through it hair comes out . I gave relative few people who had transplant and they told me the medicine made there hair fall out but I arm on the waitlist for transplant this is the one thing that concern me losing all my hair I know a kidney is a much better gift and it may be stupid to worry about but right now I’m already losing you are the first one I talk to on dialysis that is having this problem so it make me wonder if my from dialysis I’m on pd but they have change my prescription so many times to try to get right my nephrologist said that is why it could be dialysis.
I am so glad I am not the only one, I agree a transplant is an amazing gift however it comes to be, but I used to have long thick hair, now I look like a scarecrow, it just feels really depressing having the disease itself isn't pleasant at all, the constant pill popping, 3.5 hours 3x a week, blood pressure all over the place, in and out of appointments. I know some people are stronger at dealing with it all but sometimes it's a struggle. The hair thing is all I had left that was me that I felt it hadn't been taken away, but unfortunately it has.
I'm hoping once I do get a transplant the medication doesn't worsen it.
I've been reading all kinds of forums and it's been mixed all over, but mine started pre diaylsis and got worse with diaylsis.
On PD for over 3 years...at first my hair began falling out, but now my hair is so thick...I think our bodies go into shock for a bit and then figure it out..lol...or it could be all the eggs and protien I eat
Good to know that your hair began to fall out but now is thick I always had long beautiful hair it was fine but I had lot of it my hairdresser use to say when she cut it it started growing I hope this is a temporary thing
Actually...I shouldn't have said it fell out, because what it did was "break off"...I have shoulder length hair and I would notice clumps of hair maybe 1 to 2 inchs long ( mostly on my crown). but it grew back , rather quickly and felt fuller and thicker...But I sure understand how you feel...its a horrible feeling
I dye my hair every 6 weeks for the last 15 years or so. I am 24 years post transplant . My doctor says there are no problems, because it is not something you ingest.
On PD...I dye my hair every couple months, but I always purchase the Amonia Free brands...never has caused a problem that I know of...
I had stage 5 CKD, but GFR was not low enough for dialysis, however, it was obviously headed that way. I had been on the list for 2 years. I had my hair professionally dyed with Redken Brunette products, Auburn Highlights and did Olaplex #1 and #2 treatments every 6-8 weeks. Each time, I went, I asked my hair dresser if my hair was getting any thinner. Her reply was always NO and that my hair was actually quite thick. Then a miracle happened, a kidney came my way and I got transplanted 8 months ago. I now take about 20 pills per day for various things but the anti rejection drugs are Envarsus and Cellcept. My hair did not fall out at all pre or post transplant. I guess I was lucky all the way around !
