Hi, I am not new to Health Ulocked but new to this community. I recently had an ultra sound of the kidneys and it indicated that I have mild atrophy of the kidneys. Right kidney Size: 8.2 x 4.7 x 4.3cm the left measures e: 9.6 x 3.0 x 4.6cm. My eGFR ranges from 60-64. I have not been able to find much on line concerning atrophied kidneys. So I was wondering if anyone in this community has this issue. I did read however, I can get “ medical treatment” and follow a diet low in sodium, phosphorous and potassium. My sodium and potassium levels are both in range, I’m not sure about the phosphorus. Obviously I want to be proactive and keep the function that I have now. I do have an appointment with a nephrologist, but it is not for awhile. When I see him, should I ask for a script for a renal dietitian? So, if anyone has atrophied kidneys or knows something about how to stop the progression, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Hi Merny5. Some atrophy of kidneys is normal as one ages. But some have more of that than is normal. None of us here can really tell you what your specific situation is - only a nephrologist can do that after looking at your scans and labs. Here's a link which further explains the condition: kidney.org/atoz/content/wha... Regarding your question about seeing a dietitian, I think that would be a worthwhile idea. A good dietitian will look over your labs and medical reports and come up with a great diet plan tailored to your specific needs. It's nice you're being proactive about your health. Preventing issues, when that is possible, is a great strategy.
I have one kidney smaller than the other. Urologist after and ultra sound for another condition told me one kidney smaller than the other and kidneys were damaged by a urinary blockage.
Thank you orangecity! I had a scan years ago and it showed some narrowing in one kidney. However, apparently both kidneys are smaller than normal. Has this affect your eGFR? Did your urologist say that you do anything about it, medical treatment, diet? Thank you for your response
