Today they gave me heparin after treatment as my CVC has been clotting and the doctor prescribed it. I've never used it so wonder what some others who do have experienced? I have surgery scheduled Apr 1 and don't know when or it I need to not have it before.

Horsie, it is quite common to have heparin in HD. Helps to keep the blood from clotting in the dialyzer and stuff. Makes it hard to stop the bleed when you come off, but that's common. However, call your surgeon and ask them when they want you to NOT have heparin. It is short lasting, but check with them. This is crucial.

And yes, I have been on heparin for other things. You might see you bruise more easily.

I am on high doses of Heparin, due to clotting on dialysis. Can't say I have had had any issues with it. I do notice if i cut myself, the bleeding takes longer to stop. You must inform your unit, if you are having an operation etc. They might choose not to give you any or lower the dose. However I have been told it is generally out of your system after 3 hours.

You have a smart doctor. You don't want to have a stroke. Use the heparin.
