flexible cystoscopy concerns

I am very worried about having this done next week due to the following concerns.

I have urinary retention.

I am always constipated from the medications I have to take.

So there must be no straining afterwards which I always have to do.

I have a constant uti which I take antibiotics for daily

I am just terrified of this procedure can I refuse.

I would go for all of the other procedures involved but just not this one - I have a bad feeling about it.

Any advice would be most welcome

I think this is what I had , they used a small camera , numbing cream , didnt have biopsy , it was ok , had a cuppa and drove home 25 miles , some cramps later just took painkillers, if you can go home after it might be what I had , you can ring receptionists as she said I could drive home , good luck x

I would refuse it. I find when I have a concern about me I’m usually right

I would ask about the the success rate for the surgeon and the success rate for the procedure, I would always go on my gut feelings! If you have any doubts- leave it out !!! It’s normally right .

yes I usually rely on my gut feelings as well and there is too much at stake to go wrong here.

It is no worse than having a catheter. It is very tiny and should only take a few minutes. They might find what is causing your issues. Isn't that worth 10 minutes of minor discomfort?

I had a cystoscopy done last week. Caught a uti abroad in asia travelling. It then went into epididymo-orchitis. Then went into chronic prostatitis. This happened in dec and 4 months of antibiotics. Anyway i had a uti which showed e coli. Still got pain so they did a cystoscopy. I was worried and apprehensive about it. The nurse said they do one every 15 mins. I waited then got called in. They pushed numbing gel in and off the went. Felt a little bit of a push but no pain on insertion. I did feel stinging when iy went through prostate into bladder but doctor said this was because of my prostatitis. Over and done with in minutes. Thankfully everything ok so whats 15 mins out your day. You will walk out of there and say what was a i worried about

Are they trying to figure out your chronic UTI? Seems like the test might be important for you. It doesn't sound that painful or dangerous from the other posts. Ask if they could use imaging instead? I would make sure they understand you are anxious about it so maybe they'll give you anti-anxiety meds or something to make your poop easier or be extra sensitive. Hope it goes well whether or not you decide against it.

fartikins, thank you for your post. Going to urologist for first time tomorrow for 3 utis in 2 months. Tried keflex, cefpodoxime and better hygiene and still found blood in the urine. And hospital stay for 3 days too. Very stressful. May have urine retention. Any other tests I should ask for? What antibiotic is safe to take daily post transplant? Thx, BB

Having utis during dialysis and particularly after transplant is quite common. My spouse took all kinds of antibiotics to keep them in check. He was also told he had some urinary retention and told he might have to cath himself in the near future. No fun! We finally concluded that the immunosuppressants were suppressing the normal environmental down there giving the bad guys the freedom to multiply. So we found a great cranberry probiotic for urinary tract infections which the transplant center said it was okay to take at half dose. And his infections went away. (His lab reports say there is a some very low-activity, but my hubby doesn't experience any symptoms.) You may want to consider trying that approach if your center agrees. The urinary tract probiotic use can be found Amazon, but there are others out there too. amazon.com/gp/product/B01HC...
