Hi , I’m 81 years old male and 3 years ago I had a kidney removed because of cancer, a blood test revealed a score of 52 for my kidney function, is this anything to be concerned about. Thanks.

It looks fine honestly, I wouldn't worry too much. If you can clean up your diet and avoid NSAIDs you should be fine. Blood pressure okay?

If 52 is for the 1 kidney, that's not bad. My mum had same operation for same reason and her sole kidney figure was 36. Nephro happy with it (and unable to increase) but we weren't.

So mum followed a Nutritional Therapy protocol which has since lead to an increase to ~60 🤞 She was also able to wean off BP drug.

Could you share more info on the Nutritional Therapy she followed please? Or share a website or blog that could provide more info. Thanks!

That would be wrong as every case is different eg her reason for having CKD differs from many others. A good NT adopts a personalized approach for that reason.

I'd be happy to send links for qualified NTs.

Agree. Please do.

Please see 2 links below from which to select a suitable NT eg renal specialist. I suggest CNHC registered too where option given. Good luck.

Same. I had a cancerous kidney removed last December.

My first blood test with the GP after this showed eGFR of 41, I got a text to say my kidney function was deranged (their actual phrasing) and to remember to stay hydrated and re-test in 3 month. So I upped my liquid intake, did the re-test, 52. This was deemed satisfactory. But I upped my liquid again (getting into summer weather) and when I had the follow up with nephrology my eGFR was 60, which they were very pleased about, but worried about the amount I was drinking. When I spoke with the urology McMillan nurse she said just drink normally, that eGFR shouldn’t be worried about until it gets down to the 20s.

I think the first result from the doc was looked at as being a patient with 2 kidneys, hence the deranged comment and retest request from them, they hadn’t checked my notes.

So your result of 52 would be fine. If you had 2 kidneys working at that level then you’d be well above the magical 90 deemed as normal.

That's a very acceptable eGFR number. My hubby has a kidney transplant (one kidney, of course) and his eGFR is also in the 50s. Every one is happy. Sometimes one kidney will "expand" and and take over the function of the other but that doesn't always happen. We're happy with our situation.
