stage 3b controlled BP to -/+120/72 avg. 75 YO . no other conditions except for IBS. I have been experiencing terrible nightly calf cramps. The kind that make you jump out of bed and try not to scream. My feet and toes also get cramps at night.
I’m asking the community if anyone has experienced the same or some advice on what to do. I see my neph at end of August but would like a restful sleep.

The first thing is to check to make sure you are hydrated sufficiently. You may think one glass of water will do it... nope.... ask you doctor how much you should have and don't be surprised when they say at least 64-72 ounces. Next, check your meds you are on, if any. Then also check in a blood test your magnesium and potassium. Those minerals being off will cause cramps. Don't just start taking them without checking because with CKD, potassium is an issue. Try stretching during the day and before bed. Watch the tea and coffee as they will dehydrate you. Iced tea is a big culprit that people think will hydrate when it is loaded with caffeine. Try to walk a but every day. And I also found that using light weight compression socks helped.
I hate them. I was on a med that caused them every day. And not just in my calves, but all over. Tell your doctor you are experiencing them and see what they will do for it.
I suffer with night cramps, which I notice come if I have eaten late, especially sweet things. The blood is taken away from your muscles to your digestive system for the digestion process. I also suffer from IBS.
I also have cut right down on tea during the day and drink water instead. As mentioned before it’s important to stay hydrated.
Watch your Magnesium numbers in your lab work...I keep ice bags made up in my freezer ( 3 cups water with 1 cup 90% rubbing alcohol) in a ziploc bag...and apply it to the cramp and it soothes it for me...this recepi for ice bag works great because it never really freezes, it just stays slushy and easy to wrap around where you need it...I also use this ice bag to soothe itching
Low water intake and/or having one or two electrolytes that are low usually give me leg cramps. As a result.I try to keep my magnesium levels in the normal range as well as the other ones. Hope this helps.Once i get one, i usually stand up and try to flex thst leg, but there are times when that doesn't work. I just have to keep flexing the leg.
I would get your sodium levels checked. I used to get severe calf cramping and was told I had hyponatremia brought on by an epilepsy medication. I'm on 6 salt tablets now daily.
I believe my cramps are just part of the CKD process…too many toxins too many years…I was diagnosed with IBS in 2006 and the doc told me 9/10 tablets of psyllium husk river supplements…not the easiest to take but when I go regularly the cramps…mine are int the upper part of the abdominal 6-pack (not that I’ve ever had that phenomenon referenced…lol!). Point is very few vitamins and supplements have any scientific based benefits as is more and more proven by studies and the fiber shouldn’t be used in place of just as a supplement but there is plenty of peer-reviewed studies showing the benefit of psyllium hush fiber to the entire metabolic disease process of CKD, CVD, and T2D. Most probably due to some sort of anti-inflammatory benefits and relatively evangelist oxidative stress which allows better blood flow to muscle fibers and reduce cramps. HOWEVER…as always and especially at stage 3 NEVER (put anything new in your body before getting approval from your MOST TRUSTED PHYSICIAN! For me though it has many benefits!
