I have stage 4 kidney disease as well, from PKD, I also have a hiatel hernia. Anyway not only do I suffer from leg cramps, I seem to have a lot of pain and fatigue in general these days as well as some swelling in my legs.

shaz53 & Frankie24 Leg cramps could be a sign of either too much fluid is being taken off if you are on dialysis or your potassium is low. But double check with your doctors. If something doesn't feel right always check with the doctor.

I had my hands cramp up for the first time last week.

My fingers actually went in different directions..

Stage 4 acute renal failure also.

Yes. Regularly. The fastest way to get relief is to stand and walk. Somebody told me that years ago and I thought they were insane. But it works!

Leg cramps are very typical for people with renal disease. If you are on dialysis it's even worse. I've got to walk after dialysis or I have bad bouts of leg cramps. A half a mile on the treadmill after dialysis is enough to "redistribute" the fluid in my body and allow me to sleep through the night with no leg cramps.

Thank you EndStageRenal , I am wondering what will happen over the next few years , the kidney nurses won`t tell me and when I do ask questions , they say , "oh you don`t get that with CKD stage 4

The nurses are trying to put you at ease--and there's no need to fret too much. If you still have kidney function above 15 or 20 then try to preserve that as long as you can. Stay away from salt and large amounts of protein in your diet. Also be aware of foods high in phosphorus and potassium--your kidneys have to remove excess amounts of these and they are struggling if you are stage 4.
