hi everyone, my egfr for the last 3 months has dropped each time. I had this before but now not going back up. I am at 46/48 egfr. My GP says it is fine, nothing to worry about. Just basically ignore. I am not worried about it, just checking I have been given correct advise. Thanks

depends how old you are if it’s fine or not ,if your in the region of being a senior citizen then your probably ok but if your younger it needs controlling.

Also it depends on what caused it for example if it’s high blood pressure then get it under control you must tackle the reason.

Finally if you going for bloods don’t try and change your diet greatly before hand to try and get better results you’re only kidding yourself.

Eat and drink normally then if results are not good take advice from the medical people.

thank you. I am 60 and no high blood pressure. not diabetic. Thanks for advice on blood test. I have had a couple of uncles that had dialysis and sadly passed. That was the reason I thought is mine normal.

You mentioned you've "had this before but not now going back up". I'm wondering if you've recently caught a virus, an infection, etc. which can cause numbers to go down for a time...then they go back up. Same thing happens if you're exercising or dehydrated before labs. In my opinion, I'd keep an eye on the the trajectory of your eGFR. (Also pay attention to your creatinine values, BUN values, etc.) There is a considerable amount of controversy in the medical field about eGFR and what it should be as we age. Some like the table presented in this thread, others not so much. Your doctor may fall into the latter group. The controversy is explained here: academic.oup.com/ndt/articl... I'd personally consider seeing a nephrologist with your family history, particularly if no one now can explain for the trend you're seeing.

hi Darlenia, Tku. Yes now just keeps going down. I put above about ultrasound saying I have calculi or calcium on kidneys. Can’t remember exact term. I do have creatinine all the time in urine when I test. Tks for your help.

Re your last bit, generally the pre-test advice is to be hydrated and avoid meat.

Wow, any doctor that sees a decline and says it is fine...you need a new doctor. It is not fine. A GFR of 46/48 at your age is stage 3. Now is the time to do diet and lifestyle changes to keep it from going down so fast. You have no obvious comorbidities, like diabetes and High blood pressure. I would be concerned to find out what is causing the decline and so should your doctor. At 60, your GFR should be above 60 and actually at 85.

I had a similar experience and got a new Doctor who is keeping me on diet and monitoring. My CKD level is caused by other than age.

Because of family history I am so glad I reached out for direction. Thanks for putting the link up.

Here is a link from National Kidney Foundation on eGFR and relation to age.

I forgot to say ultrasound says I have calculi/calcium on kidney. Sorry if have said it wrong. I have no idea what this means and GP said no further action. My levels previously were up and down but now just going down. Is this a normal finding on ultrasound? Thanks everyone.

No. This isn’t normal that’s what everyone’s telling you in here dear :-) Essential for you to get a new dr. An internist. Get referral to see Nephrologist for gene / family history workup, along with diagnosing your kidney issues. Take NO NSAIDS at ALL.

I’m in the same eGFR boat, different reasons, mine lowered 10 points and my dr got me in to discuss immediately. I do just have one kidney, though.

You need to move faster as this has been a pattern in your health, we’ve spoken before as I recall, and this doctor may be causing you harm! It isn’t difficult just say you’d like a second opinion, or to explore more options. Step on the gas here, time to get some real answers. Best to you!

Hi~Mine is also 42, and the doctors do not seem concerned; #1, I'm 82, and #2, I've been on high doses of prednisone for three years, raising my creatine. I'm now on 3mg...great... We will see what the creatine is in the coming months, but I don't expect a change in the egfr. It was as low as 36. Now, if someone could find where I put my energy!!đź’ž
