Dietary restrictions and the workplace...

Hi all,I am wondering what your experiences with working and your diet? My department got rewarded with a pizza party. I requested a salad to accommodate low sodium diet. I was told no special treatment. Won't be showing up to that lunch despite being the team lead.

Thoughts? Am I being the unreasonable one? I feel as if society as a whole excludes those who must eat differently or die a early death.

I am not working but live in a senior community. Whenever they have special get togethers and have food that is not in my CKD diet, I just eat a small amount of it and adjust my CKD diet for the day. It seems to work for me.

What hill do you want to fight on? Pizza is an easy out for that kind of activity. Our work eventually got it when the clinicians protested and since we were a healthcare company, seemed feeding people crap as a reward was actually a conflict of what we stood for. So instead, they stopped doing anything with food. NO parties, no dinners...nothing. We were forbidden to do anything outside of work too. No more Christmas parties or even retirement functions. All Forbidden. Actually, it was ok with most but sad they would not accommodate.

They rewarded your group for something. Show up with a salad for yourself and enjoy the celebration.

They do that where I work...pizza, donuts, fried chicken sandwiches, cakes, cookies, BBQ sandwiches....you name it. Every now and again a fruit tray. I just don't eat it. No point asking for anything else. I bring my lunch and just eat that and the snacks I have.

True! That's the risk - parties being pulled for good. I've seen that happen too with holiday parties that got political. People do need to be aware of the risk part in that risk-benefit equation. Lol.

I had ulcerative colitis for 15 years, an ileostomy for 30 and CKD for the last 3. My workplace has NEVER accommodated my diet. I was just seen as anti-social for never participating in such events.

Exactly. We are seen as antisocial but in reality, we are being excluded because we take our health seriously. I have been talking to co workers and I'm shocked by the number of them that have some sort of chronic condition. It's sad that companies don't care.

Don't give the food a second thought.

Have a bottle of water or iced tea and just enjoy the company as opposed to eating anything.

It's your smile that counts.

When you hear of another meal being planned, suggest to the person in charge that foods like salad be included for those who choose.

It's the company not the food.

All part of being a warrior. We carry our badge with honor and to heck with those who don't see our journey. We have each other to lean on. I hope you're not true to your screen name and eating too many Bananas. Too much potassium! Hang in there.

My hubby has been a diabetic for decades. As mentioned by others, simply take a little bite or two and adjust your diet to accommodate or simply bring your own. He's been doing this during parties, luncheons, at work, at private events, everywhere. We're all captains of our own ships, it's simply not wise to ram one's ship into others to make a point. Sail along in harmony. But it's hard to accept sometimes. Recently, we attended a big event where one vegetarian received his very own entre while we we sat there with roast beef covered in apricot jelly, a salad with a sweet dressing, a heaping amount of mashed potatoes and, of course, an exceptionally sweet dessert. Ironically, the entire group is aware my hubby has diabetes, many of them there have diabetes too! Anyway, I've decided to discreetly bring in something specifically for my hubby next time around, and perhaps even share with others. So, we'll sail around the problem and continue to enjoy the comradery of others.

Feel good that you are eating healthier than the rest and enjoy the meetings/gatherings. Take care of yourself by packing your own yummy, healthy treat.

As a former pizza addict, it's extremely difficult to turn down that pizza! But it's just what we do and munch on our own food taken to the event. But event on! And have fun with it!
