hi last Monday I had blood test which showed creatinine 123 umol and egfr of .44. had another blood test one week later and creatinine level has drastically gone down to normal level. All I have done is drink more water.i m in menapause and sweating a lot. My question is if I had problems with kidneys would only drinking water correct everything or does this show I must have been dehydrated and not kidney problems. Thanks. Anne

Your egfr is still 44 which makes me think kidney function but ask your doctor to be sure

Yes. Deidration is one of most common cause of increased creatinine level. Expecially in summer. Just to make sure repeat blood test in 3 months but most likely it was only matter of drinking more.

Thanks for your reply. I'm discussing with doctor today my results of kidney function blood test. As all appear normal in sample. Need to know what they mean normal and what is tested in kidney blood function test. It can't just be creatine. Thanks anne

The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel part of blood tests contain the eGFR and creatine results. The is also a Creatine/BUN ratio result in that panel too. There is a LOT of info on the RSN.irg, NKF.org, AKF.org websites to give you an idea of what those numbers should be.

Do some of your own research!! Good luck!

You are right. Most of people (and Doctors) focous too much creatinine and egfr but kideny have lot functions. So it's all toghether which gives real picture. But as you said if all others values are in range you can be highly confident it was only deidratation.

Hi, doc says it was dehydration, urea, creatinine, potassium all back to normal. Doc said If I had underlying kidney probs they would not return to normal that quick in 7 days by just upping my water intake. So I'm so relieved. Now drinking more and do feel better. Thank you for replying to me, anne x

Unfortunately there are many ways...and most unknown...that the kidneys can malfunction. I had normal blood work for years with rhe exception of protein in my urine with was explained away as my working out etc But...it was kidney problems, so I suggest that you live life you have kidney issues and get on a plant based diet. They do not call it the silent killerbfor nothing and a lot of people are running around with no symptoms until they end up on dialysis. So believe it and stop rhe denial. Most physicians will tell you not to worry because they cannot do another for you until you need dialysis and that is a big money maker for them

Hi,. Nothing was found in my urine. I live in UK. I have had ultra sound and nothing on kidneys. All normal, no sign of anything. They do comprehensive bloods in the UK when you go into hospital. I will get rechecked in 6 months and start a more healthy diet. Thank you.

Check your lab and make sure they even tested for protein. Only Japan does to the normal population.

A kidney function blood panel, which is pretty standard in the US - reports protein status via BUN, creatinine, A/G ratio, UACR, etc. Urine tests only show protein in a specific area (bladder) whereas blood tests show precisely what's in the blood flowing through the entire body and its organs. As kidney disease progresses, blood tests are relied on heavily (some lose pee function completely in ESRD). However, a urine test can be a quick and simple way for checking on protein early on. Those interested, can purchase test strips over-the-counter too.

Yeah done that all normal as work in NHS uk

See if you can get checked sooner. I was reassured that everything was normal until my Gp called in a panic to tell me gfr was 28. CKD is something, as many of us have found, a lot of doctors pay little attention to until the late stages. Good luck!

exactly. A low GFR is no accident.
