My nephrologist sent me a kit in the mail to do a urine test for metabolites. First I need to be sure my medicare covers it. I do not trust verbal OKs from lab and I do wonder what they are testing for.
Has anyone else done this??
Thanks
Kelly

No, I've never heard of that. But unless you sign a waiver saying you are responsible for any tests which aren't covered by Ins., it's up to the lab to know what's covered.
My Rheumatologist ordered a test which wasn't covered. I got a notice from my Ins. that they had notified the Dr. and the lab and they either have to appeal the fee or eat the charge that I was not responsible. They were just letting me know by sending me a copy of the paperwork.
I would check with your Ins. if it's a private company. I have Medicare/Medicaid so they can't get blood from a turnip : )
Good luck.
Contact the insurance preparer to give the medical codes for the test and the Anne and FDA register number if the lab. Conversely he can order the test with a known outpatient lab that you gave used before. ( You go or drop off sample there ).What metabolites is he checking for?
Actually..As nurse who also worked for an insurance co as case manager it becomes rather complicated. It is how it is coded... I have medicare and supplement.. but there are alwasy considertios. A written verifications and codes presented t insurance company. the word of someone at the lab is useless as they do not know. Had a friend who had labs ordered by doctor. she went to Lab corp and was told it is covered... did labs and was then billed for 30000... the person iat the lab apologized...It is up to us to verif everything nd get it in writing.
