I am having my gallbladder remove next week. I’m category 3 kidney disease and I mentioned to the surgeon that I can’t use any NSIDs as pain killers. He brushed my statement off with a “You can still take them...your kidney disease isn’t that bad!” I was in shock! Still am! I am NOT going to do so! Besides Tylenol is there anything else you could recommend for pain relief?
What to use for pain relief after an operat... - Kidney Disease
What to use for pain relief after an operation...no NSIDS!
You have the right to refuse anything that you're uncomfortable with. I would get a second opinion from another doctor about alternative pain killers. There's different ones out there.
I agree. There are other prescription level meds that can be used in smaller doses for a short time. I would be very wary of a doctor who prescribes ibuprofen to a stage 3 patient.
Dear Dllfb,
One, very often, Overlooked resource is your Local Pharmacy- Pharmacists are Very Highly Qualified People. So, maybe Before you 'Raise The Roof' with your Doctors/ Consultants, a Trip to Boots- or other Independent Pharmacy- might be a good idea.
In any case, one 'armed' with a Pharmacist Opinion, most Doctors DO Listen! I wonder at a Surgeon that knows 'So Little' about your Condition though.........
Sending ALL our Best Wishes Dllfb

Hi, why don't you ask your kidney doctor what he or she recommends for pain. That's where you are going to get the best answer.
I WAS GIVEN TRAMADOL
Hi Dllfb, Some doctors just don’t listen and they can never be wrong :/ I wouldn’t take NSAIDs either. I agree you should call your kidney doctor and ask. Then call the nurse at the surgeon’s office and explain your concerns and what your nephrologist suggested.
Good luck with your gallbladder surgery, hopefully it’s laparoscopic and you are not in a lot of pain after and only need tylenol!
I have had a transplant and gallbladder surgery last year. I had to spend a night in the hospital and went home the next day on hydrocodone. Only had to take for a day or two and then just took tylenol. Hydrocodone is tylenol based and is safe for me to take. Can you email your nephrologist and see what he recommends you take after surgery?
Dllfb,
Wishing you an easy surgery and speedy recovery.
Both brother-in-laws have had laproscopic gall bladder removal and were initially given Vicodin after discharge which they took for a few days, and then Extra Strength Tylenol, if they chose. Neither are kidney patients.
Ask specifically what to expect and what you will be prescribed; agreed that you have the right to refuse a medication and negotiate an alternative. They were back to work in two weeks; watching the lifting.
It will all go well. We will be here cheering for you and waiting to hear.
