Having bouts of arthritis and sciatica pain and reading that I am not to take any NSIDs...and taking Tylenol doesn’t seem to touch the pain...I’m asking what you all take to help with pain?

What to take for pain instead of NSIDs?
Sadly, there are few options for OTC meds beyond Tylenol. Only your physician who knows your complete health history can determine if any prescription medication and the correct dosage and length of time to take it would be an available option for you. There may come a time when you may have to make a hard choice. I take a daily dose of 81 mg of aspirin. It was/is supported by my cardiologist. I'm not in favor of transplants for personal reasons but I decided that if my kidneys fail I can still lead a life of my choosing on dialysis, but if my heart issues get more dangerous I have no acceptable options available. Speak to your physician and I wish you luck in making the decision that will be right for you.
Dllfb, I so agree that Tylenol doesn't touch the pain like an NSAID did but like Mr_Kidney, following my stroke, I also take a daily 81 mg aspirin prescribed by my cardio for the same reasons he shared. Taken together as needed may touch the edge of the pain but certainly fails to provide any real relief.
With the amazing production of Covid vaccines in such a short period, I am hoping that perhaps additional funding will go for more acceptable pain relief remedies as well as prescribed aids for other serious chronic health issues.
hi Dllfb,You will need to talk with your doctor to see if they can prescribe pain meds. You can try acupuncture. You can see if there is a biologic if your arthritis is really bad.
My husbands Nephrologist suggested Tylenol Arthritis. She said it's a a little stronger that regular Tylenol. Hopefully, that will help.
I have found with severe pain there is only opioid based pain relief left if you cherish your kidneys. Normally you Dr will mitigate your kidney state without telling you. Mine did and it cost me 15% kidney function after one week of the medication. I immediately stopped it and have recovered most of the loss over the last 6 months, but not all. As yet medical marijuana is un-tested against kidney function, so I wait for that to be tested scientifically.
Meantime I put up with daily pain. There likely will come a time when I have no option but to mitigate the pain myself against kidney function, or go with the addictive opioid option. Until then I soak up as much pain as I can by trying to ignore it as best I can.
The choice has been simple for me, I can't live without kidney function but I can live with pain, all be it not very well.
Most arthritic and other pain is caused by inflammation, so controlling that helps. My doctor was agreeable to turmeric twice a day for inflammation. That, with careful control of diet, avoiding sugars, grains and red meat, should make a difference. I don't have sciatic pain but I do have joint pain and other pains associated with a couple of surgeries in the past and turmeric really does help.
