Hi seeking help,I have been on dialysis three months, fistula in arm fine , but when needling is done hits my nerves and so painful that I don’t continue dialysis,I have used emla cream and nurse gives local plus cold spray but when nerves are hit it’s unbearable,I have been told I may have to have chest catheter, any one experience this and how did you overcome it thanks.

While there are some folks in this community who are on or have been on dialysis, you might like to join the Kidney Dialysis community. You might get more answers and get them quickly in that community. Best of luck.

Thankyou

Hey raelers,

I have been on dialysis and do have a fistula but it has not been used. I do know though they did use my fistula once and did hit a nerve and yes it hurt like the dickens. I almost passed out when it happened. They did try again but when they did it again they used a ultra sound machine to see where the needle was going and it worked the second time like a charm. Also I did have a dialysis catheter put in once in my groin and it accidentally nicked a nerve and every time they did dialysis after awhile it hurt really bad and I would be heating up really bad. I know this is not really related but I wanted to share that with you so you understand I understand what you are going through. Have you considered peritoneal dialysis? You can do it at home and it is a lot less intrusive. I hope this helps and hope the best for you. Take care and blessings.

Thankyou for your reply,i am glad to hear i am not the only one that has needles hit the nerves and like you just about pass out, at times i look around at others and think they are doing well, and i think something is wrong with me,i cant have tummy one as i have a navel hernia, and yes they use the scanner and not often they get needle in but most of the time they hit nerves even with a scanner.

I am sorry about your issues with dialysis. As you seek help in resolving them I would hope you would quickly begin seeking a living donor for transplant so that you can get off dialysis.

Yes asked my nep and he said may be later see how dialysis goes first, and he said i may have to have chest cath if they keep hitting nerves.

I'm so sorry this has happened. Mu first fistula everytime it was used by nurse or tech I had unbearable nerve pain. It brought me to tears and I am a tough cookie. Once I started doing my own sticks it resolved. Something about feeling from both in and out helped me avoid those nerves. Have you considered attempting your own sticks? I won't let anyone else but my hubby touch my access. Blessings
