Looking up

I started my journey when first diagnosed with CKD last October. Creatinine level of 1.86 and GFR of 39 . Finding out that some meds were probably the cause of the damage I immediately quit taking those meds . I Started a Kidney diet , kept blood pressure normal and lost weight . Well as of today my Creatinine level is 1.32 and GFR is a 58 . My point is do what you have to do and be positive . I know I was already surrendering those first few days . 6 months later I feel I can live a happy life .

That’s great, what meds you think was causing damage?

c0wboy61 profile image

diclofenac and pantroprazole

Kidneys don't like non steroidal anti inflammatory. Was told people who take Nurofen / ibrupropen regularly for long periods can be toxic to kidneys

Have you talked to a nephrologist regarding the drugs you think caused your kidney issues? My nephrologist actually gave me a RX for diclofenac. Yes is is a topical NSAID, but the dose is so low. I was told the dose being low, and is rubbed on the skin -does not go into blood stream. And I also take omeprazole for over 20 years. My transplant center are the ones that started me taking omeprazole. It is like pantroprazole. I am living well with a creatinine of 0.9 over 21 years ago since my transplant in 1999.

I too have been taking Omeprazole for over 20 years, prescribed by gastroenterologist due to serious chronic gastro medical condition. Guess is choice Doctor has to make, treat one condition that could possibly affect another condition, but the more serious condition if not treated could cause more damage.

My immunosuppressant meds are the cause of my bad acid reflux. I actually take omeprazole twice a day to keep it under control. Does not effect my creatinine.Have you gotten your COVID vaccine yet? My husband and I both got Moderna on Jan. 13 and 2nd shot will be Feb 10th. We live in Wyoming, and even though really rural, seems to have their act together.

Best of luck and take care,

Topical medicine does definitely get into the bloodstream, that’s how its effective,

Yeah for Cowboy61. I remember you were pretty upset and worried. Well done and keep up the good work. It is doable.

Great and congratulations on your achievement. Creatinine is just one part.

Did you have any other issues with BUN;Uric acid, protein in urea etc?

c0wboy61 profile image
c0wboy61 in reply tovinadhun2

My BUN was high at the beginning 35, now its a 14. The rest all fell into the normal levels from the start.

When your BUN goes above 20, it tells you that you are dehydrated. And an elevated BUN also then effects your eGFR and your creatinine. It tells me that you were not drinking enough waterYou really need to have a conversation with your ordering doctor and get his take on your October blood tests and the improvement now. Also tell him about your change in diet. I would also want to know about about your uric acid, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, and of course protein, etc. were. CKD is diagnosed over time, not from one or two blood tests. A doctor looks at an overall trend over 6-12 months. And he looks at all values in your blood and urine in order to make the diagnosis. As we age our creatinine does go up. At 59, a creatinine of 1.3 could be normal for you?#$%

Talk to your doctor.

Not sure about the BUN and dehydration...mine is generally 23-24 and I know I'm not dehydrated as my pee is clear. The darker yellow it is the more likely you are dehydrated. An elevated BUN can also indicate your kidneys aren't working. This is my case as the damage was done due to high BP over years.

One thing I eat a lot of Salmon lol. Portion size is essential too.

I’ve been avoiding salmon, which I used to love, due to its high protein content. So that’s especially interesting. I’m stage 3 and I’m in the UK so don’t have access to a renal dietician.

Great news👍🏻 I can feel the happiness when we know we getting better. As when my baby born extreme premature due to severe preeclampsia so that time my kidney function was only 13% but after 6 months it’s bit improved and now 3 months ago was 28%. I have another blood tests on 2nd Feb🤞🤞It’s good to stay positive and happy. I really enjoy my every moment with my 6 months old baby girl❤️
