Does bloodwork reveal kidney disease?

Sixty seven year old male whose kidney function has been questionable for a couple years had bloodwork done recently and these are the results: BUN - 24, Creatinine - 1.83, EGFR - 37, Total Protein - 6.1. Should he be concerned and referred to a urologist?

Hi Tiskets,

Blood and urine tests will determine kidney function; disease etc.

Based on the fact that the kidney function tests that you have mentioned have been repeatedly questionable, my thoughts are to gather copies of all of the prior and present labs; and make an appointment

with a nephrologist; a doctor who specializes in the kidneys and discuss them.

This person, will assess the patient and run their own specific sets of labs and tests as to make a diagnosis and set a care plan. If he or she feels that a consultation or treatment by a urologist is in order, they will refer you to one.

Many factors such as hydration, medication, diet and health issues can influence results.

Does this man have hypertension, diabetes or any other issues? Does he smoke?

What other tests have been performed? Has the present attending physician blood tested such basic things as sodium, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, albumin, iron, and consistently run a CBC ( complete blood count)Vitamins D and B12 ?

All things to present a whole picture.

Before you go to the appointment; organize. Review labs and check off any areas of concern and ask questions.

Bring a list of all medications he is on and the dosages; this includes vitamins and any other supplements. If you can jot down a sketch of foods eaten that would be great.

Take a notebook with you and scribe for him as it will allow for patient focus on the discussion.

Better to have this checked than wonder.

Please reach back and let us know how you make out.

You should make an appointment with a nephrologist, not urologist. A nephrologist specializes in all things related to your kidneys. If your labs have been questionable for awhile it is more than time for you to see a nephrologist.

Best of luck to you!
