Higher platelets

Hi i am new to this group, it seems very helpful and supportive. I am stage 4 i had a blood test done recently. My gfr has dropped again but ive noticed my platelets have risen to 464. I know it should be below 450, is this something i should keep an eye on and what does high blood platelets generally mean to stage 4 ckd patients. Thanks

Hi and Welcome to this forum.

Thrombocythemia is the term for high platelets and can cause blood clots. Not being a doctor I know that there are a couple of different methods to treat this. One is medication. Any time you take medications you have to be cautious about the specific med and the dosage. You didn't provide other information about your current GFR so it's difficult to know exactly where you are and what contributing issues you have.

One thing I've learned over the last (almost) six months is that you should be keeping an eye on all of your health issues, including lab values, diet, medications, and dosages. Which one of your doctors ordered the labs? What did they say about the blood work results? Are you seeing a nephrologist and if so, what did that doctor say to you about the results and your dropping in GFR?

Thank you for your reply. I hadnt been feeling good so i asked my GP to check my bloods. When i got my results i analysed them and wasnt sure about the platelets because they had risen. My gfr dropped from 28 to 26. My GP felt my results were satisfactory but i'm not so sure. I am due to see my nephrologist in january 2018. Thanks

When your GFR goes down below about 60 you are starting down the slope to kidney failure. I believe 28 to 26 is in stage 4. I am in stage 5 at 11 to 13 depending on the day. The main thing that I notice that makes any difference is when I really watch my diet and stay away from meats and eat fresh fruits and vegetables. My potassium is good but my sodium is at the upper limit and my phosphates are high so I need to watch my salt intake and cut back on dairy, cheese and beans. I haven't been watching my diet as well as I need to this holiday season. It is good to create a spread sheet to watch your lab values so you can see what is doing well and what is getting worse. You also need to watch your diet and see what helps and what hurts your values.
