Hi louise67,

Not quite sure just how you're "doing" your body fat. I didn't think it was that easy to measure accurately unless you know all about body callipers and things like that, or you get one of those hi tech scans.

But basically the whole weight loss concept is based on the notion that if your Body Mass Index is high, then it is high because your body is carrying excessive amounts of fat which has a number of health and wellbeing risks. (Unless you've got muscles like an Olympic weight lifter!)

So as you lose mass (weight), you lose fat.

Of course, there are ways to estimate how much actual body fat a person has, but unless measured properly, they're probably better described as 'guess-timates' and, as far as I know, these are based on guessing it backwards from your BMI or similar facts.

When I watched the Hairy Dieters get scanned and have their body fat levels measured properly on TV and be told that their bodies were approx 40% fat, I thought they were really brave to do that publicly on TV.

I think I would have almost died on the spot if a doctor had told me that my measured body fat was 40%!

But 40%, 50% or whatever, pretty much diet and exercise/activity will reduce your percentage body fat over time - subject to any prevailing medical issues.

We have a Body Fat Monitor bought a while ago on special offer from Lloyds Pharmacy that gives all sorts of data including measured muscle, recommended calories, water and body fat - that for me is about 34% fat at the moment. It has been as high as almost 40% before I started my weight loss program.

The sort of thing I'm using is lloydspharmacy.com/en/omron... , although this one gives fewer results and seems very expensive!! :-(

Ah, one of those devices. At risk of being dismissed as a Luddite, I've never got into those.

Bathroom scales are high-tech enough for me!
