Am I on the right track?

Bonniebunnie profile image

NHS diet says 1453-1600 calories a day but for good weight loss stick to lower end. 3 weeks in and lost 3lb. Week 4 put on 1/2lb. Eating 1200_1450 each day. Only 1 day at 1600 in the whole 4 weeks. I am devastated as I weigh everything. I even count the onion on my salad! P.s. walking 60-100 mins daily.

SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE 😥

What are you eating? Calorie counting can work for a few weeks, but if the foods you are eating are problematic, the process can quickly hit a brick wall.

Yogurt and fruit for breakfast, soup for lunch (max 200 cal can), slice multiseed bread. Tea varies eg, salad or home made pasta dish, meat with wholegrain rice, drinking green tea all day. One coffee in afternoon and I count the milk

Hello and welcome, Bonniebunnie :)

The NHS BMI calculator usually gives a range of around 400 so I would check it again as you're quoting a 150 range. But, having checked the appropriate calories for you, I don't understand why you're eating below it. Eating too little is not the way to go. Check again, eat the amount it advises and start looking at how you're using those calories as all calories are not the same in how your body uses them.

This is a great place for support and information, and it may give you a new angle on 'healthy eating' so have an open mind and jump in. You'll find everything you need in our Pinned Posts by following this link healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... I recommend joining a weekly weigh in on the day of your choice (why not today?) and using the Daily Diary, where members share their meal plans.

Active participation can give a great boost to your own efforts so I hope we'll see you joining in forum activities :)

I think I put 1600 as my personal max to make sure I'd lose weight

In my experience (I started on the 12 week plan but have since changed my way of eating) I lost an average of a tiny bit over 1lb by eating in the middle of my given range. I suggest you aim for 1600 and you should do fine. Don't go below 1456 as you may have an initial loss but you will slow your metabolism and grind to a halt

Thanks. I'll try that for a couple of weeks and let you know how I get on. Thanks for the support x

You're welcome :)

Our weight can fluctuate according to how hydrated we are, water retention, whether we’ve eaten more salt, what’s in our large intestine waiting to come out, female hormones etc etc. Half a pound is nothing in that context. I can fluctuate up to 8lbs, which was a cause of great grief until I started tracking my weight properly with an app, and saw that every month I was dramatically heavier on the same day. And its not the day conventional wisdom says women are supposed to be heavier. If you can, try to see the long picture & use a measuring tape as well as the scales.

I will also say that your diet is quite carby, and lots of people here, myself included have found cutting back on carbs including fruit, has enabled weight loss.

Thanks, must admit I am heavy on the salt. Will cut back on salt this week too. Thanks for your reply and support 🤞
