Loss of will power

I seem to be fine the day before and a couple of days after weigh in. The other 3 days finding it difficult to "be good". How do others cope?

Hi Penqui,

Yes a week is a long time to be good. It helps me to think of other things than food that will cheer up for the mid-week lull. Or other things that will distract me and keep me busy during my waking hours. I don’t know what this could be for you, but it can be anything like go for a long walk, a good book (there’s a thread here with book recommendations), tackling a messy cupboard or room..., a bubble bath.

It’s worth looking at your food diary- are you alway eating the same things? Maybe you are just bored so pop in to the daily diary thread for some inspiration. We once had a fun challenge to eat the alphabet. Trying new real foods beginning with each letter.

Hi Penqui, good to meet you. Have you just joined the Forum?

3 things

- are you eating enough? It's better to lose the weight really slowly and steadily and feel satisfied.

- are you eating enough protein and healthy fat? I find that if I don't eat enough of those and instead waste my calories on, say, a small sugary treat every day, then I don't feel satisfied and the small amount of sugar makes me want more sugar! So whilst I'm losing (I was maintaining at my ideal weight then went nuts over Christmas) I'm allowing myself 3 glasses of wine per week and one sugary thing (dessert ,cake or chocolate) per fortnight. No other white-sugary things and definitely no pretend sugar (0 cal drinks etc). Otherwise it's just the sugar that's in fruit and root veg for me. I seem to be able to cope with that without triggering a big lust for sugar. Some people go totally 'cold turkey' - no sugar at all - especially people on a High Fat Low Carb plan - I'm sure someone will be along to tell you about that soon! HFLC didn't suit me (although I did it for a year once) but I learned a lot from it.

- I'd say, stop calling it 'being good'. Because it just sounds so much more exciting to be naughty! And then I find my childish little brain just wants to rebel. So think of it as being healthy, giving yourself energy and a great body! I was about to say 'you deserve it' - but actually I don't care if anyone on here deserves health and a great body or not! I could be a bit mean and selfish one week but I'm still claiming my health and slimness haha! Seriously, I guess I'm just trying to take the 'good girl/bad girl' out of it all.

I’m with Eleanorba on the ‘good’ thing. It smacks of the punishment of skimming world & weight watchers and fat shaming people with insulin resistance. My mother - who is in other ways amazing - has spent 30 years fat shaming me, because I was so bl**dy hungry on a high carb diet. Why was I such a greedy pig not to eat in moderation like her & then I could also slip down a grating. I have been moderate low carb for a month & my trousers are now slipping down. I genuinely have gone off cake etc, but when I feel slightly tempted to eat some of the rye toast that I bake for my son, I remind myself that I am resetting my metabolic hormones & if I eat random carbs, my hormones will be back at square one. So i have not been ‘good’ for a month, but I have been sensible & far sighted.

PS I am also childishly determined to ‘show’ my mother that I too can slip down a grating, but not her ‘moderation in all things’ way. I find being a bit cross can be quite motivating!!

Of course, very irritatingly, my mother will not notice a slinky me, only a fat one. She says she did not ‘notice’ that I was painfully, period-stoppingly thin when I was a student. I need to grow up & do this for myself not my mother 🤣🤣🤣

Oh she’s deeply screwed up from a flawed childhood of her own. But she’s been an amazing granny to my son. Thank you for listening Eleanorba & sorry to hijack your thread Penqui.

Hi penqui, at the moment i dont "feel hungry" this is the beginning of my 4th week on keto. I have eaten some "none keto foods" and as you say been naughty lol. We all do it I'm sure. If you feel hungry eat something healthy. In the early days i made myself scrambled eggs with fried mushrooms. Its my favourite. If i wanted a chocolate biscuit i reminded myself why im on keto and what my end goals are. It can be hard we all have blips you just need to find what works for you. Good luck hun.

Just agreeing with everyone else. If your eating plan requires eternal vigilance, then you are going to fail. We can't exert will power all the time. Most of us can hold a fart while we are in an elevator, but I doubt anyone can hold one for ever.

You need to find a plan where you can relax and let go of your willpower every now and then, so you can regroup to carry on.
